I'm convinced that the league really needs to reconsider its scheduling and the amount of games to a season because it seems like almost every team is dealing with injuries constantly. I think a 72 game season, with more time between games would not only be better for the players health, but it would also make for better production from teams, increase practise time and some teams wouldn't play so sloppily on a consistant basis, which means the fans get a better product. The league would likely lose alot of cash though right? How many more players have to continue to break down before we see some change? I think 72 games with maybe a best of 9 monster finals series at the end would be pretty cool. The fans pay to see their players in uniform, not suits.
this would just end up causing players to miss a larger percentage of games. players will get injured regardless of 30 games or 100. injuries are part of the game. if the nba doesn't schedule a game, the team will schedule a practice. plus - money is money -- why cut down on games (revenue) if they don't have to.
I believe most owners don't care too much about profit of an NBA team because they mostly do it for interest. It is more like the NBA itself wants to make more money and also the players themselves want to make more. Ideally, we should just have 58 games season. Each team play each other one home and one away. That's also a fair way to determine the standing.
Hell, let's just have a one game season. The teams that win their game get into the playoffs, the teams that lose their game go to the lottery. The playoffs are too long, also, so there will be one game playoff series. Playoff seedings are determined by the margin of victory in each team's game. The team that wins their game with the biggest margin of victory will get a bye in the first round while the other 14 teams play their first round game. Then, the top seed is paired off with the lowest remaining seed for the quarterfinals. To further reduce the risk of injury, all games will be one quarter long. Since the NBA Finals is the biggest stage and nobody wants to see even one star have the slightest chance of injury, the final game will be a team game of H.O.R.S.E. instead of an acutal basketball game.
I think you're right. There are so many games, a lot of teams stop paying much attention in the cold months and then turn it on after the All-Star break. Fans do the same. Even broadcasters treat it that way. Fewer games would make each one more important. And, it won't seem so much like a 6 month warm-up for the real season.
they probably could reduce the "4 game in 5 days" phenomenom by lengthening the season a week or two. I'd have no problems with that. I think 82 games is going to stay.
i've always been a fan of the "bye week" in basketball (and baseball, but that's for a later date) see here's how it works. the top two teams in each conference get an entire playoff series off. the next two highest ranked teams in each conference, get to choose up to two games off in any playoff series of their choice. and get this, the games they choose, they AUTOMATICALLY win. it's pure brilliance.
maybe if the first round of the playoffs didn't last a FREAKIN' MONTH, they could extend the schedule in that time period instead.
