Rocketfan- You are at a very interesting and fun stage in your life. I would say that the next 3 years will be very important in your life. It is great that you are looking at UT-Austin, but so is every other HS senior in Texas. On your thread you said that school was one of your options. "Options" is the keyword, because there are many other quality schools in Texas. Keep in mind that since UT is so crowded (40,000 students) they are somewhat selective. They just started a new admissions process, where there are 3 ways in which you can be admitted. 1)Regularly, 2) for the summer, or 3) provisionally. If you are admitted in #3, you can't even start your career at UT-Austin. You have to start at an off-campus sister school that is part of the UT-System. Also, housing is one of the first things you do when you apply to UT-Austin. If you plan on living in a dorm,(from my understanding) you must apply for that in September or October in order to be considered. If you are in the top 10% of your graduating class, then you will be automatically admitted. If not, I would say to study for your SAT/ACT tests, because they will look at that these scores very closely. Also make sure your 2 essays are nicely written. Good Luck! ------------------
I enjoy being home once I'm there. However, I'm always ready to get back to school after a month or so. Also, after a summer at home I usually welcome the transition from Dallas to College Station. I enjoy being able to spend time with my family and friends. I'm sure that I won't be able to see them very often once I graduate. So in a sense, it's good that I'm getting the opportunity now. It's apparent that there are more qualified people in this thread to comment on living situations in Austin. However, I do have several good friends going to UT. Two of them lived in Jester and San Jacinto. S.J. was pretty nice. Now they live off-campus and yes, it's expensive. ------------------ "...just because a clever person can complicate the discussion about the truth doesn't necessarily mean he or she is making any progress in finding it."
thanks guys.. JJ.. i was defining options as schools i'm pretty sure I can get into.. and of course I have a whole bunch of others which are a little less likely.. i've heard UT is getting selective.. i was in the top 5% the last time I got my class rank though.. so unless i blow some classes off or something I should be in the top 10% when i graduate.. which makes it a lot easier.. as far as not having to worry about being declined by UT and the other state schools ------------------ Shane "Save Our Rockets" "Life without basketball in Houston........without an arena that is what it will be"
I graduated last year and I've been living on my own since. But I love going home when I get the chance (like Christmas). That may be because my parents live in Hawaii. . . and I live in Minnesota. I don't know either. ------------------
I still don't mind going home. I love my mother and sister, but it gets very boring, quickly. Most of my friends aren't returning anymore, and when we hang out we just drink and reminisce over the "good ole days" . I still like them, but I think we've sort of parted ways and hang out for what was rather than what is. ------------------ Clutchcity.net... source for all your Rockets, Astros, political, music, humor, and Gordita news.
RF- Its good that you know what must be done in order to get into a quality school. Now don't blow it by partying the entire time your in school! That can be accomplished a lot easier than you might think, especially in Austin where parties, alcohol, and girls (oh yeah!) are abundant. ------------------
RF, I graduated May 2000 UT. One tip, go with a coed dorm, oncampus or offcampus, for atleast one year. The rooms suck. Their is a lack of privacy. The food sucks. Maintenance can be slow. The pluses...meet tons of people at the cafeteria, lounge, hall. This leads to friendships and study groups. Don't have to worry about food, except on bad days, with all the other minor adjustments. Roommates are a gamble. I have never had a problem and still keep in touch with two of them despite living in different cities. ------------------ A 50 win season?
thanks for the info joe joe and jj.. joe joe. yeah i've always heard to at least spend one year in a dorm.. jj.. i dont think i'll get too wrapped up in all of that.. i've pretty much stayed away from all the partying and drinking etc in high school because i've been focused on making sure i'm in the top 10% and all and keeping my academics first... college I plan to stay the same way.. if i'm attending school on my parents money i'm sure it wouodn't go over too well if i partied etc and killed all my grades.. i just hope this year is good.. i know it will be hectic, but one of my last chances to hang with this group of people all together at the same time... ------------------ Shane "Save Our Rockets" "Life without basketball in Houston........without an arena that is what it will be"
