Houston may not win the 2012 Olympics but it won't be because of the weather - they would schedule it in Fall so its not too hot. For mine - Toronto is an absolute shoe in. ------------------ God help me, ...I was only nineteen. Current Rocket's Salary & Contract Info
First of all, which city do you want to get the olympics more? Vancouver? or Toronto? because there isn't a chance in hell that the same country, hell, the same CONTINENT would get two consecutive olympics. Now, about Houston, do I think it will get the Olympics? Nope, because they pitched indoor track and field. That just isn't gonna fly, it MIGHT fly with the USOC, but I doubt it would fly with the IOC. Of course, a couple of days after the USOC was here, anouncements were made that some revisions to the proposal were being made, my guess is that they aren't stupid enough to try to pitch Houston to the IOC with indoor track and field. Just my 2 cents. ------------------ Anyone need a C/C++/Win32/HTML/PHP/SQL/Java/Perl/x86 coder?
You're right. The IOC is not gonna host the track and field venue indoors. Whoever came up with that idea is an idiot. I'll eat my words if Houston ever gets the Olympics. The USOC should have been shown Reliant Stadium as site for track and field. The roof could be opened with the air condition running during competition and roof could be closed in between. Oh well too late for Houston, but I still feel it will be a US finalist. ------------------ Get Ready
Anyone care to venture as to why the IOC wouldn't go for indoor track and field? As for it being too hot: If the Olympics is held indoors, which it would be, then the heat and humidity will NOT be a factor. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that records would have a better chance of being broken if they were held in the air-conditioned indoors. Have any of you guys been to Atlanta, Athens, and/or Barcelona? I have been to all three, and it's pretty friggin hot in all of those places. I'd love to have the Olympics here for a number of reasons: 1) If done right, and by all accounts, it would be, the city stands to make a lot of money 2) For all you people who think Houston is already a world-class city, I've got news for you: It's not. I want it to be. The Olympics would make us so, IMO. 3) As for traffic: all of our potential Olympic venues are very close together. I also think the Olympics would force our idiot politicians to finally do something worthwhile concerning our public transportation system. Besides, if Dallas got the Olympics, we'd never hear the end of it. ------------------ "I have no regrets except that I wasn't up to keep Randy from getting on that plane." --Ozzy Osbourne on guitarist Randy Rhodes [This message has been edited by Lynus302 (edited July 26, 2001).]
I guess Germany has a pretty good shot at the 2012 Olympics as well. I would love to travel to Houston for the Games, but I agree that the US gets way too many Olympics. Toronto would be cool. Germany probably needed Franz Beckenbauer as the chairman for their Olympic committee ------------------
Its never been done before. This is not indoor track and field (isn't that a totally different type of meet?). Track and field Olympic competitions are held outdoors. There will be some IOC members and Olympic athletes who will not approve of changing the atmosphere of the meet. It's a risk Houston is willing to take. Although the plans look nice to the USOC, its not a good idea. Why would the IOC go for an indoor track and field competition? ------------------ Get Ready
You bring up the exact reason I don't think they'll get it. Because many athletic bodies, including the NCAA, regard indoor track and field as it's own sport/discipline/whatever. Even if you could get people to consider them the same, you'd still have to face the most difficult thing to ever overcome, and that is "But we've never done it this way before". ------------------ Anyone need a C/C++/Win32/HTML/PHP/SQL/Java/Perl/x86 coder?
Track and field inside the Astrodome? The Astrodome is not big enough to host that kind of event. 70,000 seats for track and field is too small. I hope they can find a way to fit 15,000 more seats in the Dome. ------------------ North Star, Minnesota Stadium Advocate
I hear that and will hate it if dallas got it. Even more than I hate the jazz (that's a lot.) The Olympics would be great here. It would put "space city" on the map and demand it's respect. We already have most of the facilities. The voters overwhemingly supported it. The budget is pretty much in place with a few tweaks here and there. Weather shouldn't be an issue since Atalanta got it. Smog shouldn't be an issue since L.A. got it. Some say the numerous "Texecutions" could hurt us, but if Beijing could get it why can't we. I'm pretty sure it's all political though so I hope the folks at Houston 2012 know what they're doing. If we get the U.S. bid then we shouldn't have too much trouble with the IOC because whatever city the US picks will be a strong contender. It's time for Houston to shine! ------------------ I have seen much of the rest of the web. It is brutal and cruel and dark. CC.net is the light.
If you have never been to the Olympics, let me tell you, its the biggest, best party ever. I have had the good fortune to make it to 4, LA, Atl, Sidney, and Barcelona. It would be great for Houston. The plan is to make use of Reliant, Astrodome, new Astrohall, Summit, Enron, G.R.B., new NBA arena, and the colleges. Light rail will link Reliant with G.R.B. and the colleges. As far a facilities go, nobody can match us. The sticking point is the indoor track and field events. I hope the IOC can move into the 21st century and just accept it. At least we know there will be no wind aided records. I hope we get it. The Olympics are a truly special event. Oh yea, in Atlanta they inacted a 24 hour drinking law. See you in Athens. ------------------ T-Pooh and BahDakota went up the hill, to make a bet on a Forward. When it all came down, they were nowhere to be found. Now they should be drawn and quartered. I was at the olympic training center in colorado springs last week.. we have it for sure now.. since they met me houston is a shoe in lol ------------------ Shane "Save Our Rockets" "Life without basketball in Houston........without an arena that is what it will be"
I live in DC, and believe me, we have what it takes to win the games here in the Nation's capital. We have the facilties and security. We have the airport and can meet all international needs. We have a mild climate. We have the histoic district. Everything is already in place in DC. Plus we would use Baltimore's brand new stadiumds to host as well and thats only like 30 minutes away. DC is in good position even though we've never hosted. We have a very international flavor. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
Houston doesn't? ------------------ I have seen much of the rest of the web. It is brutal and cruel and dark. CC.net is the light.
Houston will get it one day. But it wont be 20012. I see maybe 28th. Man just thinking ahead that long is crazy. Ill come back around that time to see who was right and wrong. I wont mind having olympics here but we dont have a chance. Toronto has a very good chance. ------------------ "The girls danced, started fondling me, I got aroused, they performed oral sex," Ewing said. What kind of facilities does DC have. How can you compete with 2 retractable roofs, the Dome, Summit, New NBA/NHL arena, Astrohall, and G.R.B. Thats enough seats for over 300k per day indoors. Also UH and Rice. Oh yea, by 2012 they will be linked by rail. ------------------ T-Pooh and BahDakota went up the hill, to make a bet on a Forward. You forgot the new convention center behind The Dome. ------------------ I have seen much of the rest of the web. It is brutal and cruel and dark. CC.net is the light.
DC has two convention Centers. One in Baltimore and one in DC. We don't have retractable roof, you got us there, but you don't have a magical underground rail either. That's a huge plus. We have PSI net Stadium, MCI Center, and Jack Kent Cooke Stadium to boot. Both Cities have an international flavor, but DC has about a thousand embassys. How many you got? I'm not saying houston couldn't host the games, I'm just saying that DC has less to do in order to get ready. DC is perfectly equipped for the games. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
Can PSINet, RFK or Fed Ex accomodate track and field? ------------------ North Star, Minnesota Stadium Advocate
The Olympics should go to Melbourne, Australia! ------------------ Protrolls.com! Keep the ???? alive! The ZRBucks!
We have George Mason University for Track and Field. Although I've never been there, I understand it is state of the art. But to be honest I don't know. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
