T.O. Home of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. I love Canada. I want T.O. to get the 2012 Games. I want Vancouver/Whistler to get the 2010 Games. Quebec City should have gotten the 2002 Games but got cheated on by Salt Lake City. Toronto is the favorite because of their planned waterfront. ------------------ North Star, Minnesota Stadium Advocate

I hope that Houston gets the games. I am not really too big on the Olympics or anything, it's just that the amount of work that the great people of this city have put into it, I really am pulling for us. And I think we will get it. ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
From what I've heard, our only true North American competetion is Washington D.C. I think if the Olympics come to North America in 2012, it'll be Houston. Honestly, I'm suprised to say that, but I think we've got the best shot for the summer games in 2012. ------------------ "I have no regrets except that I wasn't up to keep Randy from getting on that plane." --Ozzy Osbourne on guitarist Randy Rhodes
It would be sweet to have the Olympics here, however I would be forced to take that entire month off due to traffic. Does anyone remember the Olympic festival we had in Houston in the 80's? Don't recall the year, maybe 86 or so? That was pretty cool but obviously nowhere near the scale of an Olympics. ------------------ First the Sopranos and now Eddie Griffin... thank you New Jersey!
I heard that Dallas was putting up a fight as well, and they'll have lots of new stadiums too, so it could be a battle with them. ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
DAMNIT WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT THE GAMES HERE! Not only would it be horrible for the city, it would just be plain too damn hot for the olympics. I dont want people coming and trashing up my city! Atlanta already was a "not-so-clean" city before the olympics, but we all know it didnt help. In short , I DONT THINK HOUSTON SHOULD GET THE OLYMPICS ------------------ "The early bird may get the worm, but so does the bird that finished off the tequila bottle the night before"
There's no way that Houston should get the Olympics for one simple reason...Mattress Mac. As if we don't see him enough, his name would be plastered EVERYWHERE on the olympics. Personally, I think that San Francisco has the best shot among North American cities ------------------ Mein bratwurst has a first name, it's F-R-I-T-Z Mein bratwurst has a second name, it's S-C-H-N-A-C-K-E-N-P-F-E-F-F-E-R-H-A-U-S-E-N
DrewP- it being "too hot" wont be a problem. All the stadiums in Houston are either indoor or retractable. The outdoor events, I'm sure will bew taken car of heat-wise. I think having the Olympics in HOuston would be great- good publicity, world will be focused on Houston, etc. etc. ------------------ __ Ñ _ _ _ /_ ______ _ \ ÝÝÝÝl____| * |___ lÝÝÝÝ ¡,.-ñý¯Çi ¡,.-ñ~ñ~ñ-.,¡ `¯ýñ-.,
I'm pretty sure that Toronto losing out to Bejing this time around secured their spot for the 2012 games. However, I do think it would kick ass to have the Olympics here. ------------------ When you make an assumption, you make an ass out of Uma Thurman.
Weren't they talking about doing a tri-city thing for a while with Houston, San Antonio, AND Dallas all hosting the Olympics...? Like... Texas 2012 or something? Anyway... I'm definitely looking forward to the games up here. Should be a ton of fun, plus they got a lot of much needed roadwork done up here finally... ------------------ "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and STATISTICS..." - Mark Twain -
They've brought this up before, but the Olympic powers that be want it in one city. They've also brought up the problem of transporting athletes for opening/closing ceremonies, etc. I think it's a good idea. Several times, people have pointed out that the games are growing SO big, and keep adding new events (like Women's BB gun shooting) that it's too big a burden for many cities. There are many cities and even countries that would like to "help" host the games, but can't handle them. They've also asked "should" a city have to bear the entire burden. ------------------ Stay Cool...
FWIW, Olympic officials were touring Cincinnati yesterday as a possible site for the 2012 games. They claim that 78% of the needed facilities are already built. ------------------ "UNBEATABLE"
I think the USA gets too many Olympic games. First Atlanta, then Salt Lake City. I would like to see the games elsewhere for the next two decades or so. ------------------ All hail Fadeaway's Cyberfish -- your 2000-2001 BobFinn* Fantasy Basketball League Champions!
I'd like to see the games spread around the world, but its unlikely because of American influence. A spokesman for Houston 2012 said that if the games go outside North America for 2012, he is 95% positive the 2016 games will be in North America. I think the new cycle will be 2 for 1 (2 games outside North America for 1 game in North America). If that pattern holds than look for North America to get the games in 2012. 1984 LA 1988 Seoul 1992 Barcelona 1996 Atlanta 2000 Sydney 2004 Athens (?) 2008 Beijing 2012 North America (?) Houston is completely the wrong place for the Olympics - too hot, too humid and too low elevation (I would mention the pollution but its not like Los Angeles and Athens are easy on the lungs). These factors significantly lower the odds that world records will be broken in track and field (which is the main attraction of the Summer Olympics) and if records aren't being broken, the TV ratings suffer. Not to mention that Houton's complete lack of zoning and urban planning makes it one of the ugliest cities on the planet. Hopefully the Olympic Committee will take note of the empty shopping centers, the Kwik-Marts and the Gold Cup billboards and decide to take their prize elsewhere. ------------------
I'm surprised that so many people don't want the Olympics in Houston. I'm equally surprised that they seem to not want it here for the Olympics' sake. I don't want their piece-of-garbage, pseudo-sport, marketing-juggernaut organization in my town. The last thing I want to see is a million new people in town congesting my highways and a billion more scrutinizing us through television. I understand why city officials might want it, but I don't want the trouble. ------------------ RealGM Gafford Art Artisan Cakes
