I'm flying out to NYC tomorrow morning for my summer vacation. I don't really know a whole lot about the nightlife and party scene down there. If any of ya'll could give me some advice about good bars, restaurants, clubs, and even strip joints, I'd really appreciate it. I've already seen the usual stuff like Central Park, Empire State Bldg., Chinatown, Little Italy, etc. This time I want to check out the nightlife. ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater
Baqui99 Geezzzz, where to start!? My best suggestion is to pick up a copy of "Time Out New York". It's a weekly magazine that lists all that is happening around the city. It's pretty in-depth and reliable. You can also access them online! http://www.timeoutny.com/ ------------------ I figure the odds be 50/50, I just might have something to say.
Whisky Blues at the W Hotel. Very happening. If you are staying at the hotel, you can get in without any wait, otherwise.... Other than that, the whole town is a party. ------------------ I let the dogs out.
Some additional thoughts... Nostalgic places like the Oak Room at the Plaza, drinks at the bar in the Waldorf in the early evening, lunch at the Bull & Bear. Soho is good for sending your wife/girlfriend off for a while shopping. Little Italy is fair. China town for cheap knockoffs. Empire state building is cool. Rays pizza near Times Square is excellent and so is Sbarros across the street. Just some minor advice....they are all fake watches regardless of their story. ------------------ I let the dogs out.
If you want to see a different side of New York, and like places a little edgier, try ACE bar in the east village/alphabet city. I think it's on 5th street. It's kind of post-punk type place. Max Fish is another edgy type place though on the trendy side. It's off Houston(people up here pronounce the name of that street a little differently.) st. near Katz deli. These are places where not too many tourists go at all. Strip joints here are kind of lame compared to Houston. Flash Dancers is about run of the mill. Try eating at Two-boots pizza, stay away from what passes as Mexican food up here. Katz deli is good too. Prospect Park in Brooklyn is actually better than Central Park if you can make it down there. For a really insane but kind of fun bar try The Village idiot. I would've said Coyote Ugly but since that movie came out, I'm sure it's kind of annoying now. For something kind of different fun, and usually a decent number of single women, try Swing 46. It's on 46th street between 8th and 9th. There is a cover, but if you get there at around 9:00 pm they have a free swing dance lesson, and usually way more girls than guys who are looking to dance. Don't go on Thursday night though, because it's usually really crowded that night. ------------------ [This message has been edited by sleepyfloyd (edited July 25, 2001).]
Obviously not if he has to go to Atlanta... ------------------ "I'll tell you this, the older I get, the less I trust people. It's true. It's damn true." -- gr8-1 going through some growing pains.
Scores is one of the most exclusive strip joints there is. Jean-Claude van Damme got beat up there by a Hell's Angel. Kid Rock and other celebs show up there as well. I've never been to Scores myself, but I've heard lots about it. Go to a broadway show if you are able too. I've seen both Cats and Phantom of the Opera, and they are wonderful. Even if you're not into that kind of stuff, Phantom is so cool, I'd tell you to go anyway. Tickets can be bought cheap on the day of the show. ------------------ "I have no regrets except that I wasn't up to keep Randy from getting on that plane." --Ozzy Osbourne on guitarist Randy Rhodes
Thanks guys. I look foreward to getting totally smashed in NYC and picking up some sluts. And I hope to check out Phantom time permitting. Maybe I'll even punch Peter Vecsey in the face. ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater
I betcha Patrick Ewing could help you out in finding a good strip joint ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
You HAVE to punch Vecsey for the lot of us! I'm so glad you thought of it. He has caused us too much grief to continue un-punched. Btw, I know we have a few posters here who live in NY; why haven't they taken care of this already? ------------------ RealGM Gafford Art Artisan Cakes
Belive me it's only because I haven't seen him......yet! ------------------ I figure the odds be 50/50, I just might have something to say.
A few years back I visited NYC. My friends took me out to all sorts of places. The one that sticks out was this place called "VOID". The entrance was in some wierd alley way, there was some some cool kinda kraftwork music going on, they had TV monitors for tables and screens all over the wall showing strange 40s' Haiti voodoo chicken neck ringing videos. We smoked reefer with no hassle. NYC is WILD!! ------------------ This space left intentionally blank...
I'm with Jumanji regarding Whiskey Blues at the W Hotel. I was there last summer when I visited NYC, and it was happening in a trendy sort of way. It's not a dive bar, by any stretch of the imagination. So, if you're into that thing (I'm usually not, but I was on vacation) I would check it out. Using my best "Swingers" slang, there were "lots of beautiful babies there", and they mix great martinis. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
As far as neat tourist things, go to ESPN Zone. Very cool place. DO NOT EAT AT CARNEGIE DELI!!! I've never seen such overpriced stuff. FAO Schwartz is cool. Statue of Liberty and Empire State bldg are overrated. My best advice is get a subway pass, and start searching. (And even if you don't like shopping, go to Century 21, near the World trade center. I couldn't believe how cheap you could buy stuff in New York! Two Perry Ellis dress shirts for 25 bucks!) ------------------ NBA Naming contests... They're CRAPTASTIC!!!
Stay OUT of Times Square, by god if you can. i think sticking downtown/east village will be your best bet for partying. hit avenue A and Avenue B from 14th street down and you will run into a million hot spots. you don't have to look, they will find you, and most are open till at least 4 in the MOanin. also, don't be afraid of uptown. harlem, washington heights, The CLoisters all have interesting history, and the food is delish. my favorite restaurant in New York is DinerBar, on Lexington Avenue between 100th and 101st street. trust me there is too much to post here, but about Central Park vs Prospect Park, i disagree. They were both designed by the same guy, Frederick Law Olmstead, and they are very similar in design. but Central Park takes the cake. it is too enormous to explain. What it is is a large group of fields, pathways, trails, little parks, big parks, baseball fields, meadows, ponds, swamps, gardens, and so on and so forth. to fully understand Central Park it would take days to explore. my favorite spots in the park are the Sheep Meadow(enter around 66th street near Tavern on the Green). I guarantee you have seen a movie with a scene filmed there. also check out the Harlem Meer and the Central Park Botanical Gardens. they are on the Northeast side of Central Park, at 5th Avenue around 106th-110th street, right at Duke Ellington Circle, and home to yours truly. go to the Museum of Natural History and Science for a mindblowing Space presentation, narrated by Tom Hanks. oh yeah strip bars hehe New YOrk Dolls in TriBeCa is hot. Paradise is an all-nude place in midtown. for you serious partygoers, e-mail me for the HOOKUP I LOVE NEW YORK ------------------ fitter, happier more productive comfortable not drinking too much eating well (no more microwave dinners and saturated fats) sleeping well (no bad dreams) no paranoia fitter, healthier and more productive a pig in a cage on antibiotics [This message has been edited by across110thstreet (edited July 31, 2001).]
Go to Rookers and check out the games! The type of athletic freaks that legends are made off grow there in abundance. Rookers is basketball heaven on earth or so I've been told. I’ve never actually been there. I stayed at the Mariot Marquee on 42nd street in Time Square in 96 on New Years Eve night (actually three nights) it was one of the best vacations that I have ever been on. I have a noticeable Texas accent that I thought would kind of make me a target but it was just the opposite. I was almost treated like a celebrity on New Years Eve, I never bought a drink all night and I got completely drunk. My wife at the time went up to our room just before midnight and bazooka puked in the bathroom and she missed the Ball drop. To bad for her. Any way with out going into detail I thought New York was great. ------------------ Women can not fart, belch or burp...therefore they must b**** or they will explode.
OK, back at work today. Time for a wrap up. Some of the cool activities: Guggenheim- Had an exhibit by world renowned architect Frank Gehry. Absolutely amazing models of his work. $8.00 NYSE- Take the tour so you can see the pandemonium on the floor. FREE admission World Trade Ctr.- Even if you don't go to the top, walk around the courtyard where Homer's car was parked in that one episode. Always something going on- Bloomberg is running for NYC mayor and had a rally Friday afternoon. Battery Park- Awesome view of the Statue. FAO Schwarz- Even if you're old, you've gotta check this place out- coolest toy store I've ever seen, eons better than the one in the Galleria. Canal St.- Smack dab in the middle of Chinatown. Fake RayBans, Oakleys, Tag Heuer, Movado, etc. Bootleg CD's and the latest movies are available too- picked up SM2, Shrek, Made, and Planet of the Apes at $5 a pop. Fake sunglasses $5 and watches $10. I bought this chick I'm trying to bang a fake Prada purse. MTV's TRL- Anyone who watched TRL last Friday might have seen me amongst a horde of teenybopper Carson Daly fans. Didn't bring a sign, but 4 of friends called me and said they saw me. Saw Mandy Moore, Carson and Mark Wahlberg. Pretty neat. Little Italy- Too bad the best Italian we have in Texas is at the Macaroni Grill. Here you can eat outside at a table- mmmm....veal Central Park- Take a rest there. Sit down on the bench, and just make fun of the people walking by. Lots of fun. Bars/Pubs- All over the damn city. Bar None was bad ass, but none of the broads there were too eager to put out for a 21 yr old from Austin. Maybe cause I was totally "FUBAR." At one pub I recall singing along to Phil Collins "Sussudio" loudly and getting a round of applause and the bartender gave me a beer. Following that I did an encore as the jukebox played Tom Jones' "It's not unusual"...and yes, I did the Carlton Banks finger snapping dance... If you haven't been to NYC, definitely check it out. Beats Houston any day of the week, not to mention 70 degrees weather. ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater
Are you high? I guess Daddy can't afford Damien's! ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
Damian's? Isn't that a soul food shop in the 5th Ward? Seriously, though, it's hard to find good Italian food in Texas, just like good Tex-Mex is hard to find up north. Look at the crap we have: Brick Oven (decent), Olive Garden, Macaroni Green, Carmelos, etc. ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater
