I've been looking for some basketball shoes for the last couple of days. Don't they make basic high top basketball shoes anymore? Everything I've seen is 3/4 top, with funky-looking designs and colors. Do they still make basic, fairly conservative-looking, say, Converse or Addidas (sp?) high tops? I like the shoes that the Wizard has, those black Addidas ones -- just black with the Addidas logo. They're probably not high tops though. ------------------ "I guess that's YOUR theory"
You won't see HIGH high-tops very often anymore -- most are 3/4, which is high enough for most people. Check out Kicksology for some great reviews. From what you've said, I'd suggest looking for a pair of Nike Big Flyer Force if you can find them. Or, if you can get the Jumpman Vindicate, I SERIOUSLY recommend those (I have a pair and LOVED them). Don't get the hyperflights, especially if you want ankle support. Converse isn't making athletic shoes any more. You'll still find them around, but they've chosen to focus on the casual line of Converse All-Stars and licensing the Converse name/logo. Adidas has really come on strong lately, and you might find what you're looking for there, as well. Any other questions? (I'm an athletic shoe freak) Oh, and the Converse All-Stars are GREAT -- put some insoles in them, lace 'em up tight, and they're actually great basketball shoes, still! ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
AS A person with severe ankle problems I've been asking the same d*mn thing Rocket River ------------------
The fact that HIGH tops help support your ankle is somewhat of a myth. A little background: I worked for Footaction USA out of college as a store manager for 4 years. So I know a little about shoes. With that having been said...the support you need for your ankle is not a bunch of fluff and foam that stretches from your ankle bone almost to your calf. The support you need for your ankles starts with what touches the floor. Look for a show that prohibits or prevents rollovers. Once you have rolled your ankle over, you are at the mercy of the force and severity of the roll. Some shoes, high top or not, can actually make your ankle roll worse than others if the shoe's sole is a 90 degree angle at the base. This is hard to describe in writing, but bear with me. Adidas manufactures the best shoes I have ever played in, with the "Feet you Wear" technology. The soles look odd, rounded here, no rubber at all there. But I never once rolled an ankle in them...correction, I did roll my ankle, but the shoe prevented it from rolling far enough to cause me any pain and injury. You can test shoes easily by simply trying them on. Then, gently roll your ankle, one at a time, to the outside. Let your weight take over. You'll feel it if the shoe helps, or even makes it worse. There's a reason why HIGH tops are almost extinct. ------------------ My doctor says I am bipolar. I am going to get a second opinion. I have never had intimate desires for polar bears. I'm not up on cross-trainers as much, but I'd suggest the following: Jumpman DJ -- they're what Derek Jeter wears, and I've read positive reviews about them. The Jumpman Superfreak is also very good. Hoop-T is dead-on about the ankle support issue (why wouldn't he be?, he's a freaking store manager, I'm just a guy who likes shoes). I would say that there is something to the ankle stability of higher shoes, but 3/4 top or mid top is solid -- the support difference between low and mid top is significant, but from mid to high is not much. That's part of the problem with the Nike Air Hyperflights -- they're tall enough, but they roll over very, very easily. Personally, I have fairly weak ankles. My problem is not that I roll them over while running, but I land on them funny. At least once every month or two, I'll land on the side of my foot after going up for a rebound or something. For me, I've had the best support of ANY shoe I've ever had with my Jumpman Vindicates. They have a wide base, and a stable upper. I've sprained my ankle a few times in them, but not as badly as I had in some of my other shoes. ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
Thanks for the input everyone. Vengeance, are you talking about the old Converse All-Stars, or the new ones that are out now? I actually ended up buying a pair of one of the new editions of Converse All-Stars for 40 bucks. Good shoes, and cheap, which is what I wanted since I'm just looking to get in shape. Now if only I could play...
I'm talkin' about the old-school ones actually. I actually play better in them than in my Jumpmans. I don't play in them very often, but the few times I've played in them, I've done really well. Here's some shoe trivia: Who was the last player to wear Chucks? ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
Nope, after that. Here's a hint: He played in the 1980s. Anyone else? ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
Hey, I used to be a store manager right out of school. I got out of that gig 5 years ago. But I stay up on all the technologies and product knowledge. I still play a lot, so I still have to know what I can and cannot wear. ------------------ My doctor says I am bipolar. I am going to get a second opinion. You can't be a shoe freak without knowing about this site! niketalk I would go with the retro Bo Jackson's. Air Trainer III for cross-trainers. If it's a Basketball shoe...Flightposite "KG" are nice. Or basically any Flightposite. Not an expert...just a shoe freak. Ask my closet. Still no on the Dr. J . . . One more guess and I'll post the answer as according to Converse. Niketalk is a great site, but I find that the other shoe sites cover whatever goes on there within a day or two. I think the Niketalk format is annoying -- I just let the other sites pick up the good stuff. ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
Hey Hoop-T. its fun running shoe stores. Especially the customer service. I almost took a gig running a footaction but the pay stunk, so I took the FootLocker gig instead. Anyhow. Freak, if your looking for the "old School" high tops. Footlocker carries the Reebok BB4600 High's. You remember them right? When reebok first hit the scene in the early 80's. Its been slightly tweaked, but still in that Conservative, old school style. If you head to any footlocker that isnt in or near a large city, you should be able to find it. Also there is a store called "the Shoe Dept" that carries them, and an old school Nike high top. Very Basic...cant remember the name. Just one larger Blue swoosh on the side. Famous Footwear Carries a little more stylish "old School" Converse high top. Still very basic, all white, but not quite soooo Plain looking. Probably the type your looking for. ------------------ "I have amazing, powers of observation"...Pink [This message has been edited by Dreamshake (edited July 25, 2001).]
Hey, how would I go about getting a job running a shoe store? That would kick ass! ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
Nope But it's an Eastern Conference team he played for. ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
Bill Laimbeer or Isiah Thomas. No wait, it has to be Dr. J. ------------------ My doctor says I am bipolar. I am going to get a second opinion. I have never had intimate desires for polar bears. [This message has been edited by HOOP-T (edited July 25, 2001).]
Dreamshake, True, I loved it for a while, but the hours killed me, burned me out. Depending on the volume the store does, Footaction paid pretty good. I had two different stores in the Dallas area, and they were both pretty high volume, so the commission made up for the base salary. UGH, the BB 4600...........NASTY! ------------------ My doctor says I am bipolar. I am going to get a second opinion. I have never had intimate desires for polar bears.
