I saw Planet of the Apes tonight. Anyone else think the ending really didn't make sense. I can think of ways to explain how it happened, but in terms of the rest of the film I am puzzled. The writing on the wall puzzled me most.

Is it not exactly like the original in terms of plot?

    Good Morning Rocket Fans!

Zig no, the plot is completely different. Burton has re-imagined the POTA stories from the novels.

I'm going on Sunday to see it.

Elienator other than the ending, did you like the movie?

I went to see Planet of the Apes, and it was quite dissapointing. Most of the plot of the original is no where to be seen. If this was intended to be a serious movie..it wasn't. I actually laughed a whole lot lol! The ending was a little strange too. It almost leaves room for a sequel. Other than that, the costumes were great, and every ape looked different...just like humans. The only ape they didn't have in there was Michael Jackson, who wouldn't even need a costume.
I'd give Planet of the Apes a C+.

What is up with the love triangle between Marky M., that chick, and the girl monkey? I haven't seen the movie, but is that true?

The movie is overall pretty silly. I was hoping for something more original from Burton, but it wasn't bad. Costuming / effects were great, and Marky Mark did a pretty good job as the hero (he doesn't have the charisma of Heston but at least is believable).

The love triangle wasn't that well developed, which is probably a good thing.

I am with you, Elienator. I can't think of a possible way the ending would have come about. And that, to me, was the biggest drawback of the film. It ended on that note, and I walked out of the theater in confusion. Otherwise, I loved it. As usual, Danny Elfman did an outstanding job with the soundtrack.

I think the ending has to do with Thade being left inside the space ship at the end. I guess he found some way to launch an aircraft and took himself into the electromagnetic cloud. Since the cloud bounced things back and forth through time I guess Thade went to Earth and freed the Apes who took over society or something. That's why the plaque on the wall mentioned Thade.

That's about the only way I could think of to make the ending that way. The ending was kind of dumb but I liked the movie overall.

i enjoyed the fact that they put Charlton Heston in as the dying old man ape and had him say damn them all to hell. i know you guys caught that right? thats what he said at the end of the original when he sees the statue of liberty. that made the whole movie for me. and i really expected a schocking ending like that, i thought they did a good job taking little things like that from the first movie. helena bonham carter is freaking sexy as an ape.

Yeah, I enjoyed the movie up until the ending scene. I wasn't sure where Burton wanted to go with it (Is this a social commentary like the original, a humorous sci-fi film). In the end it wound up being a chance to show off some really cool effects and makeup. It was very entertaining to watch and help my interest, but I don't think it pulled off the balance between drama and humor as well as Edward Scissorhands. There were several shots thrown in for the "Wouldn't it be cool to see a monkey doing this" effect. The very last scene was silly and didn't fit with the rest of the film in my mind.

All in all, worth a watch.

Just saw it and if that wasn't a "remake" then I don't know what is ?? There is ton's of similarity's with this and the original.

I was a big fan of the originals as a kid and this one, although not a spectacular movie,it wasn't disappointment either.

The makeup was awesome on most of the apes however the female ape characters reminded me more of the broadway play "Cats".
The main ape,Thade played by Tim Roth, was very convincing.Roth did an excellent job with his character.

The action flowed along pretty well but there was a point in the middle that lagged a bit, however the end more then makes up for this and left me wanting another ape movie.I'd give it 3 out of 4 stars.

    lol.

I liked it. I'm one of those who has never actually seen all of the original, but I enjoyed this one. And I knew enough about the original to appreciate the connections scattered about.

    Disappointing.

Way to much social commentary cross-breed with unimaginative plot. I think they really did a great job on the effects but forgot to get the writers involved.

Oh yeah, the ending....hmmm... think there is room for a sequel. Why else the silly ending. Here's the way it goes...back on ape planet, A dejected Thade is freed, digs up the old ship Marky landed in since he's the only one who knows about it (which of course still works), gets marky's pet space monkey to fly it, and he's "Back to the Future" to free his primortial buddies....or something close to that.

    Original plot was way better.

    2 1/2 stars out of 5.

Funny. I've seen reviews on other boards saying it didn't have enough social commentary and that they forgot the 'spirit of the original.'

To each his own, I guess.

The plot IMO was horrible. The love triangle thing between Estella Warren, Helen Bohnam Carter, and Mark Wahlberg was just too strange. Carter was fondling, petting, and admiring Wahlberg almost the entire movie. Warren was just staring at Wahlberg. Wahlberg didn't seem to have any interest in either of them, he had more interest in getting back to his ship. I think he had more of a relationship and interest in the monkey than the girl....WTH?!?!? So I have no idea where kissing both the monkey and the girl came from. I mean first he goes for some monkey lovin, which was freaky, and then he goes for the hot girl that he never had any interest in. Just too random...

The movie overall was about a C, maybe B-, just because of the set design, makeup, and costumes. Those were absolutely fabulous. The acting was mediocre, not great, but not horrible either. BTW, don't ask me to even try to explain the ending. At the time I was thinking it was some kind of parallel universe or something strange like that....I guess Timing's explanation makes a little sense. Tim Burton has got a strange mind...

I thought the ending was a little hokie as well, but a little less so than I was initially expecting when Walberg was walking up those steps (that is all I will say w/o giving too much info).

I hadn't thought about Thade using the mother ship. My thinking was Walberg and the mother ship were always on Earth. The mother ship initially went back in time and the genetically engineered monkeys changed history. And by Walberg leaving and going further forward in time he left room for a resergent Thade. To say it differently, they were always on Earth, the mother ship arrived many years before Walberg met the apes, and then Walberg arrived the 2nd time many years later after that.

But I can see maybe there were two different planets after all, and the ship was used by Thade. I really don't know.

Overall, I give the show a 3.5 out five stars. Saw the original again last night, give it a 4.5. My main problems with the new one was the rushed character development (what was the purpose of the blonde chic, the danced around triangle, and the stupid teenager???) and that they seemed to ackwardly use humor at the times where they really could have hammered home social messages that make you think. The first one did the latter much better.

There's only one problem, the mother ship had no more fuel remember? How could Thade use the mother ship, especially without the remote thingy that Wahlberg used to start the ship up?? It's just too unexplainable.

There were some seriously cheesey moments in the film, but the costumes were great.

There was no character development, no social commentary, misinformation about primatology (okay I'll write that off to suspension of belief), etc. etc. In fact I think that the film was only some sort of Tim Burton costume vehicle.

Does every single big market film have to be written for 6 year olds, btw? I'll concede that Return of the Jedi was goofy, but help me guys... Star Wars and Empire were cool weren't they? [IMG]

Can't a film have cool special effects but be inspiring as well? Is it just a sign of the times issue? Perhaps the original POTA was shocking just b/c evolution wasn't as acceptable at the time... the fossil record was relatively poor and radiometric U-S, amino-acid racemization, etc. weren't understood by the masses( Nevermind, they're not understood now. Maybe the original POTA is the only reason why people believe in evolution. Noone evaluates the science, they let their minister and Hollywood battle it out... they correspondingly critique or accept Hollywood's interpretation).

Sorry, I have an exam today on hominid evolution. I didn't mean to get preachey. [IMG]

If you guys want to appreciate what goes into making the film a bit more, read stuff about the efficacy of the Australopithecine hip... or the issues w/ the pongid pelvis in a bipedal manner. Obviously human actors can't collapse their own hips b/c we have iliofemoral ligaments, but bonobos and chimps hips flair laterally when they walk... and Burton tried to portray that. I don't know why intelligence always has to be associated w/ bipedalism... other than the thermoregulatory benefits of standing up... but I digress.

I liked it, mainly for the ending. I'm sure there will be a sequel that explains the ending.

Also, for future reference, let people know when you're about to discuss something like a surprise ending to a movie.
