The other night my nephew was using my computer and he said the anti virus detected a trojan, Bloodhound.Exploit.56, but it could not remove it. It suggested that he run live update and do a full system scan. That's when I came in and ended up doing what was suggested. The scan came up clean as did the spybot and lavasoft. Well there were a few things with the lavasoft but nothing unusual.

Since then I haven't been able to send or receive email through my email clients, outlook and incredimail.

I also have not been able to open Norton Internet Security 2006 or Norton Anti virus. When I try to open them, they do nothing the first time. I can let it sit all night and it doesn't seem to even try to open. Then when I try to open it for the second time, the window pops up and say norton internet security 2006 in the bottom corner like normal but it's blank where the options should be. Then the only way to close it is to end task through the task manager.

I also tried that Windows Live Safety Center Beta thing and it came up clean.

    Help please

The problem with spyware is that it's running and replicating as you kill it (if you can even do that) in regular Windows mode. So you need to start Windows without all the bugs.

Press F8 as the computer is booting (before the Windows XP screen). You should get several choices of how to boot. Choose 'Safe Mode with Networking'.

Hopefully your antivirus isn't hosed in that mode, and you can run it, as well as AdAware. Delete anything that comes up.

There is a good chance that the system will need some professional help even if you can clean a good bit of junk off. When you said 'My Nephew' I immediately thought of a teenager or at least a boy who could use the internet, and believe me, this is the worst demographic to work on their computers. They install anything and everything without thinking about it.

    Anyway, good luck.

It looks like you got hit by the WMF file exploit. http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/bloodhound.exploit.56.html

You can get a virii and trojan horses just by visiting a web site that has a WMF (Windows Meta File) graphic on it. My girlfriend got hit by this exploit last weekend and it took me most of the day to clean her computer.

In her case it installed some sophisticated spy ware on her computer.
