    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rhode Island on Tuesday became the 11th state to legalize medical mar1juana and the first since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that patients who use the drug can still be prosecuted under federal law.

    The House overrode a veto by Gov. Don Carcieri, 59-13, allowing people with illnesses such as cancer and AIDS to grow up to 12 mar1juana plants or buy 2.5 ounces of mar1juana to relieve their symptoms. Those who do are required to register with the state and get an identification card.

    Federal law prohibits any use of mar1juana, but Maine, Vermont, Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington allow it to be grown and used for medicinal purposes.

    The U.S. high court ruled June 6 that people who smoke mar1juana because their doctors recommend it can still be prosecuted under federal drug laws, even if their states allow it.

    Federal authorities, however, have conceded they are unlikely to prosecute many medicinal mar1juana users.

    "I'm sure everybody in this room knows at least one person who would have benefited from medical mar1juana," Rep. Thomas Slater, who has cancer, told fellow lawmakers before the vote. Slater said he doesn't use mar1juana now but it could become part of his treatment in the future.

    This is a good thing, If something helps people, so that they have less pain, why not do it?

    Good question. Unfortunately, the Federal Government gets to make the loudest answer.

    More than 20% of the states have now passed legislation allowing for medical mar1juana. Hopefully, the feds will reclassify mar1juana into Schedule II soon in order to allow the states to regulate their medical practices.

    I appluad the legislature of Rhode Island. Standing in hte face of political incorrectness, they did what is right. Give the people something that is proven to help relieve pain, relieve nausea, help to relieve the intra-ocular pressure in glaucoma sufferers, etc., etc. There is no logical reason that the federal government continue their prohibition of a substance that is proven to be safer than ones that are legal.

    This would have to be the first step. Once it's reclassfied, then the real battle can begin towards decriminalization and legalization for personal use.
