A standing military press is already significantly harder to do than a sitting one for anybody. However, I'd imagine a it'd be 50 times harder for Yao since he has serious balance issues at 7'6". It's no surprise to me that there's not that much weight on there.
yeah he's not blessed like some of us to be 5foot 4-8inches tall and 250-300 lbs and be able to lift huge amounts of weight and earn $30K to $60K per year. Poor sucker is going to have to get by on an NBA max contract next year.
better to wait and come back 100% .. . than to come back a week early at 80% and reinjure yourself Rocket River
Guys, let off of Yao. The picture is from before he even joined the Rockets. You don't think he's done some weight training in the three years since?
Yao's legs are huge. nice article btw, pointing out the picture in the start of thread, if that's not a classic moment I don't know what is.
do you guys who took offense to comments about his stregnth think Yao's upper body strength is a problem or it isn't. or do you think its moot because he averages 20 and 9.
no offense. i just find it funny how strong some like to leap on some pic and claim how much stronger they are. For all we know, Yao could be doing sets of 20+ reps or some warm-ups.
he may not even be doing military curls.. if he was he'd put a hole in the ceiling and bust out those lights.. lol
I never said anything about Yao not being strong. All I posted was the picture that Sina had with their "weight lifting" article. I'm extremely happy if Yao can be 100% sooner than we all thought, but I wouldn't want him coming back too early. His injury is quite serious, and could spur some other kind of serious injury if he came back too early.
What disturbs me the most is how some people on this BBS can't tell the difference between pounds and kilograms. Exhibit A: If it's olympics standard equipment there then yellow is 15kg and the bar itself is 20kg. So that'll be 50kg all up not 100+.
FYI know-it-alls That pic is from Yao's rookie year...the background is the weightroom at Westside Tennis Club. Over three years old it IS. And you take it from Tim Breaux...
And that IS a WARMUP on Hang Cleans... not a pure brute force strength exercise...a SPEED/Explosive exercise...it gets heavier than that... so relax everybody and take that puff outta ya'lls chest...
quote-langal um .. you guys can do 10 reps of standing military press with 135 lb free weights? that's hardly light by any means. maybe for a 7'6" , 310+ lb guy yes. those are actually power cleans hes doing bud if they were military press his legs would be strait and locked almost. Those are def power cleans 135 isnt to bad on a clean but for his heigt movements like that r very hard. The taller you are the harder it is to lift a heavy weight. ___
Yao has begun light workouts according to the Houston Chronicle: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/basketball/3569125.html After Toe Surgery, Yao Looks to Return © 2006 The Associated Press HOUSTON — Houston center Yao Ming has begun light workouts and said he expects to return to action in two to three weeks after surgery on an infected big toe. Yao said the Dec. 19 surgery on his left foot relieved tremendous pain, but also said the prospect of surgery made him nervous about hurting his career. "My toe before the surgery hurt me every time I step on the floor, particularly with the basketball shoes and the tape on my ankle," Yao told Houston television station KRIV. Yao is now getting antibiotics via an IV in his left arm, and doctors plan to remove the IV in about a week, he said.
Sorry guys, but y'all will have to eat crow on this one...Sina was accurate this time around, and they got the 'inside' info that's only been confirmed by Marc Berman earlier tonight. Good scoop by Sina I guess, I will try to give them the benefit of the doubt next time around, but I will still be skeptical until they have a solid track record/reputation with their news reporting.
