I am white, but i have a big problem with racism of any kind. I was just wondering how you guys felt about black rap artists, using the word n#gger in songs?

I know that it is supposed to be a culture thing or something, but i have to say when i hear it i am automatically offended. So what do u guys think?

It is my understanding that to an African-American it is more demeaning to be referred to as the "n-word" by someone who is not African-American. Why they feel this is the case, I don't really know. I've heard that it has to do with the connotation behind the usage. African-Americans still place value in being a proud, strong Negro. Whereas when it is used by people who are not African-American, they feel that it denotes strong hatred and is demeaning in the sense that they are some how inferior.

    Francis3422,

I have always found it sickening and repulsive to hear blacks say "*****" in music. I find it extremely offensive, and I don't understand why brothers call brothers ignorant. I don't get it. Some of us get angry and violent when a white person says it, but it is always used as a greeting when speaking slang. Thank you for raising that question. That word was used during a period when slavery was a way of life. It's not now, and I wish that word would be cut out of everyone's mind.

The truth is, the people that use that word are the ignorant ones.

The media's Eddie Griffin NBA Draft player profile before he landed in the Rockets hands:

What he does: He was second in the nation in blocked shots and fifth in rebounds as a freshman last season; has good shooting range and even had a triple-double.
    Reminds people of: Antawn Jamison
What he would do for his team: He could play either forward spot and runs the floor. He'll give his team a valuble inside scoring threat.

The media's review of the Rocket's draft after they got Eddie Griffin:

I'd give their draft a B. Sure, Griffin was highly touted but his behavior and attitude can be a chemistry wrecker. Needs to bulk up more. Not exactly NBA-ready. Not the best choice for Houston.

It's very sad. The "wonderfully talented prospect" one second, but the moment the media learns he'll be a Houston Rocket, it's criticize-o-rama.

Honestly it use to be a big deal for me.

But the reason so many don't worry about it is because
It just does not mean the same thing. Or at the
very least it is not PERCEIVED as meaning the
    same

The commonality of experiences in this society
lends credibility and benefit of the doubt to
a black person saying the word that cannot be
    given to another race.

I heard white boys call each other ASSHOLES
or PUNKS or Jerks or whatever . .they laff it off. . .cause
they friends. . . .NOW IF I WERE TO CALL THEM
THAT . . .what do you think their response would be?

That is not a black or white issue though. If you were their friend, they would laff it off too, black or white. Words suck as punk or ******* rarely bring any racial baggage with tme these days. If one of your white friends called you a dick or an ******* jokingly you probably wouldn't get mad. But if one of them said, "what's up, my *****" i you may very well get angry. [Note I am using the work you in reference to any black person with caucasian friends.]

Sticking with the subject somewhat, has anyone caught any of the new Real World back in NYC. It is pretty bad, IMO, but this one black girl in particular is really really dumb. She is just constantly pissed because one of the white guys in the house is ignorant. Yet, while he is openly trying to learn, she keeps making fun of him and being rude to him, and saying it is because he is so unwilling to learn. Anyway, if you've seen it you know what I'm talking about.

American business long ago gave up on demanding that prospective employees be honest and hardworking. It has even stopped hoping for employees who are educated enough that they can tell the difference between the men's room and the women's room without having little pictures on the doors.

Why bring race into it? I mean common sense tells me that if you call anyone but your friends, "*******", "punks", or "jerks" they're going to probably be a bit offended. Being a "white boy" has nothing to do with it. There are a lot of black assholes, asian assholes, etc. out there... let's give every race its credit for producing assholes and punks!

I'm a white boy and I call my friends "punk" sometimes in a friendly way. My roommate's (who is black) also called me a punk a few times, I thought nothing of it...

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking,
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

"b****" is also a commonly used greeting with my roommates/friends at school, not sure why, but it is.

    The point is COMMONALITY
    Friendship is a commonality
Being of a certain Race is a Commonality
I had a Vietnamese friend . . who told me
some of the racial slurs they used . .
and also made i note of BUT DON'T YOU USE it
We laffed because he knew where I stood on the
    N-word. . . .

you give friends the benefit of the doubt
they they generally don't think of you as
a Jerk/b****/punk in the negative way

Likewise . .. black folx give other black folx
the benefit of the doubt. . .

    it is an explaination . . ..
why would a white friend not get the benefit
of the the doubt. . . well 400 yrs of history
is hard to juse . .as I've been told ... GET OVER
