I have a linksys router hooked up wirelessly to my laptop. I had my brother in law come in to set up the whole thing. Its on something called PPOE he said.

The problem is that once or twice a day my connection will just drop. This can happen while the computer is idle, while its off, or in the middle of me surfing the web.

Then I have to unplug the power from the router for 30 seconds and everything will be fine again for a while.

Anybody know how to solve this problem?

are you downloading a lot of stuf thru torrents?

ppoe is used when you have a dsl connection, and the other option is used when you have a cable connection.

I have dsl. I barely ever download anything. Even then it can lose its connection while downloading something or while just idle.

The behavior you describe is starting to become a disturbing trend with linksys routers.

It started happening with my previous router, and I was trying to figger out why when I needed to upgrade to a router with a WAP builtin....so I just bought a new one instead of tryin to fix the old one.

thing is, it has started happening with my new one also.

every once in a while, it just up and decides it isnt going to forward any more packets...for no apparent reeason.

just deal with it for now, if I find a fix I'll be sure to post it.

Make sure the MTU is set to 1492 for your PPPOE connection.

I forgot how to fix this, but I'll explain it as best as possible.

There is this option on the dsl modem that you turn off...i forgot the name *i know geez big help*. What this does is disable the dsl from trying to log on to the connection which over rides the router. I think this is why your dsl is disconnecting or it could be due to the bit torrent program your using. I used bit tornado on my brothers computer and it would always kick him offline. Some reason I never had any programs with that program on my computer

I'm sure this will help you : I've had my Linksys for about 2 years or so and it works great with DSL. :D

    1) Make sure you have the latest firmware for your router before anything else.

    2) If you go into your router setup pages where you set it to use PPPoE, make sure you have it set to use the "keep alive" option.

If this doesn't do it, then call your DSL provider because I'm sure they've run into it before (they'll surely blame Linksys whether it's Linksys' fault or not... lol). R2k's right, though - a lot of people have had this problem. I've never had it happen to me, though.

BTW, what model is your router?

    BEFW11S4 ver 4 - Wireless B

Its already on the keep alive option.

How do I make sure I have the latest firmware?

check Linksys's tech support, its actually really easy to find.

problem is.....On th eoriginal router I had the problem with, I updated the firmware, and it made it worse.

DO some checking around and see if there are reported problems with the firmware....dslreports forums, and another one(cant remember the name right offhand) that have forums related to broadband networking will probably have threads complaining if there are problems.

Sometimes it's a simple problem. It could be the DHCP server is dropping the IP it assigned to your laptop. I used to have this problem, and fixed it by hardsetting the IP on my computer and assigning static network IPs to the other 2 comps in my house
