Is a computer virus easily discernible, especially to a amatuer computer user like myself? ------------------
My computer has been infiltrated and shut down many of times by so called hackers. Now ocassionaly i'll get an illegal message warning that demands me to shut my computer down, is that message in relation to some sort of virus? ------------------
Maybe, maybe no. How do you know hackers shut down your computer? hehe... ------------------ "I'll tell you this, the older I get, the less I trust people. It's true. It's damn true." -- gr8-1 going through some growing pains.

i ask this because I know absolutely nothing about the inner workings of a computer. Now, I can tell you that have entered aol chat rooms at times and have had my computer shut down by an infiltrator from outside...this worries me. My computer since this has been wishy washy at times, consistently givign me an illegal operation message on my screen. Now, i ask all this here for one reason: I associate with jocks who'd rather drink beer and discuss the houston texans first round pick than talk about computer difficulties, so i ask you, one of my friends from clutchcity how to combat this problem. As i was typing the above message my computer was being tampered with by an outside source(i feel like im in the freaking Matrix man). I know i dont know any of you personally, but dammit, i've read over 1/3 of some of your posts, so that makes me elgible for some friendly technical advice, dont you think? ------------------
Rockett, Have no fear, your computer is not being hacked. That Blue Screen of Death you are getting from the chatroom is a windows bug *gasps* All you had (had, as it AOL has fixed this) to do was turn your sounds off. When you ran a certain sound file in the chatroom, it would crash a file in Windows. Perhaps if any of these little AOL kids knew the first thing about hacking, then yes, they probably could do a little bit more damage. ------------------ "Where there is a will ... I want on it."
there's a cc.net chat room? ------------------ Anyone need a C/C++/Win32/HTML/PHP/SQL/Java/Perl/x86 coder?
Actually I'd think you'd have a virus scanner. The easiest way to tell if you have viruses is by running a virus scan every few days. The crashes you see can be caused by a screwed up installation, a corrupt registry, or a virus. No one can really say for sure without running that virus scan. Do yourself a favor and get a virus scanner like Norton Anti-Virus, ESET, or AVP, keep it up-to-date, and run it if you think you're exposed to viruses. If you think you're being "hacked", get a personal firewall like ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com). It's free and works great. ------------------ "I'll tell you this, the older I get, the less I trust people. It's true. It's damn true." -- gr8-1 going through some growing pains.
DoD is the real king tutt! thanks. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Rockettebustier (edited July 22, 2001).]
Once you get Zone Alarm you will FREAK out at how many times you get pinged and scanned, especially if you have DSL. I currently own a Lynksys router and it alone acts as a firewall... I would get pinged several times sometimes 100's and the cool thing about ZA is that you can link to a site that tells you who is pinging you. I really recommend ZA too! gh ------------------ Updated: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! join the club! Rockets Psychedelic Groove House Club on Yahoo! bustier wrote: "Is a computer virus easily discernible, especially to a amatuer computer user like myself?" I bet it would be... things wouldn't start working right, unable to open programs, etc... viruses can be pretty malicious and tricky...along with ZA I also recommend some sort of virus protection. Something that can scan attachments and your pc... and keep the virus definitions up to date, McAfee and Norton both have free downloads for virus definitions!! You can never be too safe. gh ------------------ Updated: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! join the club! Rockets Psychedelic Groove House Club on Yahoo!
