I am sure you can find the Magic and Shaq card for cheaper on ebay. there arent any on ebay right now, but i have never payed 75% of book value on a card.

there is a card show in houston this weekend, maybe youll find a good deal there.

The card does sound cool. I used to think alot of cards were cool and I just had to have them. Now however, I try to control myself from making big purchases of cards that have no future value. I mean this Shaq and Magic card is probably not going to go up in the future. Shaq is just not the card collecting giant that he used to be. I try to buy rookie cards that might go up in value.

For instance I just bought two Eddie Griffin Legends Rookie (numbered to 500) and I also bought a Francis Gold Refractor Rookie graded Gem Mint.

Of course I am just telling what I do. I am not suggesting that you do the same [IMG]

Do you sell your cards right away or hold onto them for a long time? My friend is a quick seller. So he'll get guys like Helton and Bonds, grade 'em, and then sell em while they are at the top their game. He makes a ton of money. My theory is to buy the cards that have legends on them like Ryan and Magic and then hold onto them for the long haul. But you're right, that card won't gain any ground for a long time.

I dont collect cards to make money. I do buy packs, so I do once in a while get a pretty good card (but I havent for over a year or two now [IMG] ). Then I sell the card whenever the player is really hot.

For instance I sold a Kobe Bryant Credentials rookie on ebay when the Finals were going on.

Then whatever I get from selling these cards I buy any Rockets stuff I can find. I bought two Griffin cards for pretty cheap right now. I know this card will go crazy in the future and then I will sell one.

The Magic and Shaq card will most likely never go up. It might however go down. Most inserts go down in value after a few years.

In todays market the hottest things going are Game Jersey and Rookie cards. So try collecting rookies that you know will go up in the future.

Beckett grades cards, but they are considered the toughest graders in the industry. Personally I dont like their level of toughness. A card that grades a PSA 10 will probably get a BGS 9 from Beckett. Their cards do fetch a slightly higher price too when selling it though. Their cases are also better looking then PSA.

Be sure your card is sorta expensive and in really good condition. If not then it really isnt worth grading. Check your cards with a magnifying glass to make sure there are no flaws on the surface, the borders are mint, the edges are mint.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind and check out the auctions and beckett. Card sounds like a winner with Shaq and Magic on it.

    Rockets:

Another beef I have with PSA is that sometimes the cards are more damaged when they come back than when I sent them. Also, their cases allow the card to be shifted if you shake the cases hard enough. I believe BGS takes measures that prevent the card from being shifted while they're in the case. I also agree that PSA grades more strictly than BGS, and I like the purchases you've made. I think Griffin's cards will start out relatively cheap then hopefully go up highly in value, as he will probably be one of the more exciting rookies to watch this year. He may make a similiar impact to basketball card collecting that Darius Miles did last season, standing out amidst a mediocre rookie class.

Yes you're right, sorry! BGS grades more strictly than PSA in my mind. Also, I think people are willing to pay more for PSA graded cards, in my opinion. I have about 60 PSA graded cards just chilling in my closet waiting to be sold.

Unless its a young unproven athlete an autograph just will not go up (unless the said player wins championships). Now there is an autograph and game jersey card offered in basically EVERY SINGLE pack. Topps, UD, Fleer, etc. There are so many autographs and game jersey cards of players that they just have a real had time going up in value. Shaq's will most likely not go up. Magic definitely wont (unless he becomes a coach and wins championships). Try collecting people like Darius Miles, Eddie Griffin, etc. Unproven stars who prove themselves jump up in value like crazy!

Those stupid deals offered on those shows on TV suck! Almost anything you want you can get much cheaper on ebay if you have enough patience to wait for it.

    More questions....

    1) What do you guys think of that channel that sells baseball cards in bulk. You know, with the guys that go ballistic over the 'deals' they are giving you. It's always a monster package of graded cards and rookies and stuff. Have any of you guys ever ordered and what were the results? They certainly do seem like good deals, but I always wonder....

    2) Does everybody agree that those autographed inserts will go down in value? Or will they go up? I guess my feeling is that they will go up because autographed cards have some value no matter what kind of card it is. What do you all think? Do you really think they will never gain any value? I'm in agreement that inserts usually bite, but with an autograph, I gotta believe they will be valuable.
