I have attempted to install an internal CD-RW and now neither of my CD drives are recognized. I have both CD's selected in my BIOS but they don't show up and I can't install them with Add New Hardware in the control panel. I'm a bit stumped. Anyone with any ideas? Thanks rH
Set the bios to autodetect. On the back of the drives is a jumper block which looks like this M S C A L S : : : These are: Master (MA) Slave (SL) and Cable Select (CS) An IDE chain functions by having 1 of the two devices (the master) speak for the other (slave). You either set the drives by using this jumper block, or alternately, with a special cable, you can use the 'cable select' setting and have the drives physical location on the IDE cable determine master/slave status. Therefore, You need to make sure you have a master jumpered and a slave jumpered. Don't mess with cable select, it will only cause problems. Examine the back of both drives. There should be a little black shunt thing connecting the two pins under 'MA' on one drive, and to under the 'SL' on the other. Also, you can have these problems if the cable is on backwards, though most likely that will prevent your system from booting. But, if the master/slave thing doesn't work, ensure that the red stripe on the IDE cable is connected to pin one on the back of both drives, as well as the Motherboard. ------------------
Thanks Otto... but they're still not installed. I've got yellow exclamation marks in the System settings under Device Manager and it's states they're not properly installed. I also get a SEC SLAVE DRIVE - ATAPI INCOMPATIBLE error message when my system boots up. When I attempt to Update Drivers, I get a message stating that I'm using the current driver already and these drives don't show up in My Computer... my original CD-ROM used to be drive I: and now nothing after H: I'm running a Win98 PII-400 machine and I've got the Plextor as my Primary CD and the original CD-ROM as the Slave. They are daisy chained off of the new cable as is the power supply. I have even tried only installing the Plextor CD-RW with no luck... should I have installed all drivers while my original CD-ROM was still working? I'm gonna hate to have to take this machine in. I thought I would plug it up and start burning CD's.... frustrated, rH ------------------ Updated: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! join the club! all pin 1's are lined up...on the motherboard and the drive, all are seated tightly, there are no bent pins, all jumpers are set and nothing. argh.. so much for thinking this would be easy. rH ------------------ Updated: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! join the club! It really seems like a problem with the Master/Slave jumpers. I suggest taking them both out and putting them back in. Whichever drive is at the top (the end) of the IDE cable has to be the Master drive. The other(s) must be designated as Slaves. I really doubt it's a driver problem. Most CDRs don't really require any outlandish, funky drivers and the ones that do can usually get what they need from the Win95/98 CD. Anyway, whatever it is that's wrong, good luck, although I think it's a Master/Slave problem. ------------------ All hail Fadeaway's Cyberfish -- your 2000-2001 BobFinn* Fantasy Basketball League Champions!
normaly you recieve this message when you have a HD in the bios that isn't there. Go into the bios, setup secondary master = none, and secondary slave = none. If you're getting a bios message, then it's not drivers... the problem happens before drivers are loaded. Try only booting with only one CD at a time. If one of the two doesn't show up, then it's the problem. If both work by themselves, then it's a jumper problem. If worse comes to worse, I seem to remember you working @ Whole Foods on Kirby. If you live near there, come to Computer Exchange @ 1212 Westheimer (near Montrose; not that far) and ask for Keith. If I'm there, I'll fix it in under five minutes and you can save yourself some gargantuan 'diagnostic fee'. [This message has been edited by Ottomaton (edited July 20, 2001).]
Hey Otto, another the weird thing is I don't have the option to install a CD-ROM in the Add New Hardware... I have the option for CD-Rom controllers and that's it... I was considering taking it into CE today and ended up doing some other things... I have tried to install just one drive like you mentioned to no avail. If you can, email me and let's talk. thanks rH ------------------ Updated: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! join the club! Rockets Psychedelic Groove House Club on Yahoo! oh, doc.... if only you were Dr of PC's.... I'm taking a break for lunch.. when I return, I'm gonna do a search for the drivers for this CDRW and take it from there... I'm at a loss... rH ------------------ Updated: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! join the club! Rockets Psychedelic Groove House Club on Yahoo! Stop annoying X10 ads!
