I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting worried about these Dream rumors about Toronto being in town. If he signs with them, this bbs will likely experience a Griffin Storm. If that happens, how would you guys and gals feel about turning off the Hangout for 24-hours? The same would apply to the other Forums. The idea is to temporarily suspend server connections for secondary forums to reserve them all for use on Dream threads.
If the deal goes down, by all means do whatever is necessary. ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
to quantify this, we are having trouble at around 200 concurrent users, which is pretty good for the hardware we have, according to other users of this bbs software. That translates to about 1,000,000 page views per day.
Good god, not the Rockets Classified forum, too! I might have a desperate need for a Rafer Alston rookie card, and no way to access ebay through the firewall. Do it dude. We need to save all the server space we can for the "good riddance" threads. ------------------ I'm so amazingly cool you could keep a side of meat in me for a month. I am so hip that I have difficulty seeing over my pelvis.
Do it without a doubt! ------------------ "Instruments are like women: After a while, you want to make love to another." - Nicolas Godin of the musical duo Air
Do whatever you feel is appropriate, for there is a great storm coming. Of course, it doen't really matter to me, when the **** hits the fan, I won't be anywhere near the BBS. ------------------ It was the time of the preacher, in the year of '01 Now the preachin' is over, and the lessons begun . . .
I think what has been said has been said. Im sure there will be a huge spike, but nothing too major. Can't you just prevent people from posting new topics for a day or so and just make a couple hakeem threads and let people post at will? Also, turn of the site search (I don't know how much this is used, but im sure it takes plenty of cycles and bandwidth when it is used) Also, suspend the newbie request for a day or so. ------------------ "Where there is a will ... I want on it."
Whatever you thin is necessary! Just make sure it iw working tomorrow morning so I can see the aftermath!
Of course, this is all up to Clutch. I'm just now suggesting it to him and much as anyone else, here. I think what would happen is Clutch would turn all the current forums to "Private" mode, so the forum name still shows but you can't get in. This change is for Clutch to decide and execute. Space Ghost, the main draw on the server is simply having a connection, even just looking. The idea is to save all connections for active page views in the Roster Moves forum, for a day or so. It actually could be Marketed as a Hangout Moratorium out of respect for Dream.
Are there any plans to upgrade? I know ya just got a new hosting service or server or something, but its obvious that this site isn't going to get smaller. Seems like this will start happening more frequently. ------------------ "Where there is a will ... I want on it."
Why not just open the chat room and let everyone vent? ------------------ "For there is nothing either good or bad, thinking makes it so." - William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Hamlet
The chatroom's used for more important things like fantasy league discussions... ------------------ President of the CC.net Realist Club, everyone needs a dose of reality once in a while...
oh nevermind then ------------------ "For there is nothing either good or bad, thinking makes it so." - William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Hamlet
Do whatever needs to be done. I know that there will also be an extra strain on the Admins monitoring the BBS, so everybody should use solid judgement when participating in the Rockets Forum. Unfortunately, the newbies and trolls (Rainey is an exception) seldom venture beyond the Rockets Forum. Would it be asking too much for Clutch to post a preemptive notice about what might happen rather than trying to post it after the fact? More capacity issue? Server farms aren't cheap and abnormal usage spikes that cause connection problems are probably less than 25 days a year. The other 340 days are fine as far as capacity. Mango ------------------ Get it right or just don't do it! Resistance is futile....you will be assimilated. Start more Webber threads!
is this domain hosted? or colocated? ------------------ Anyone need a C/C++/Win32/HTML/PHP/SQL/Java/Perl/x86 coder?
Really??? ------------------ "For there is nothing either good or bad, thinking makes it so." - William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Hamlet
I don't know if throwing more hardware at the BBS is the solution. From heypartner's reports, it might be software that is the bottleneck at peak times. Mango ------------------ Get it right or just don't do it! Resistance is futile....you will be assimilated. Start more Webber threads!
Do what you must. It won't make any difference in my case. If Dream goes elsewhere, I'll have about as much chance as waking up in the Playboy mansion tommorrow as I will of actually accessing this webpage. Not with this server. ------------------ Gascon
