You just have to assume that on Sunday's, Fox is going to be delayed at least some. If they have a 3:00 game, the primetime lineup is definitely going to be delayed. Just add extra time to the show OR just record the next show, too. I love my DVR and have had no problems with it whatsoever.

I've never owned a DVR either. I really don't record anything or think anything on TV is a "can't miss it" event. Well ok, maybe Rocket games...

I have a lot of friends that love it, but my dad got it for fre ewhen he signed up with Dish Network, and I don't really see the big deal.

I have a buddy where my group of friends at college always go to watch the ballgames. Well, with the invention of the DVR, a lot of the enjoyment has been taken out of the experience for me. My friend loves to pause the game right at the very start for like 30 minutes so he can fast foward through all of the commercials. It makes no sense to me, but he thinks its the greatest thing in the world...But here we are watching the game 30 minutes behind when it actually happens. I like to know how things happen as soon as possible.

I don't own it. You have to pay a monthly fee.

Tivo's are awesome, I've never used any other DVR. I couldn't imagine life without mine. There is no way I could sit through the commercial breaks on an hour long show anymore.

No but they do have a feature where you set it to record 15 minutes and 15 minutes after so you don't miss anything like overtime of a rockets game. I learned that one the hard way.

I am thinking about getting a TiVo, but not sure if they're worth the cost/subscription.

Also, sometimes I like to use my DVD recorder so I can have some programs on DVD, I can't do that with TiVo.

The laptop I bought a few months came equipped with Windows Media Center and a DVR box. It's pretty sweet, the quality isn't that great if you want to save hard-drive space, and you need to have your computer near the TV ... jack? ... or have enough splitters to make it reach, but it's sweet anyway.

I have a similar problem with my regular Time Warner digital cable box. Not a snowy picture, but sporadic audio pops that happen every several seconds. I used to be able to reboot it with the remote and that worked, but now that reboot sequence no longer works and I have to unplug it.

I hear that... when a show comes on that I want to watch I usually just pause it for 10-15 minutes and go do something useful, like actually get some laundry done or post on the bbs... and then I can just fast forward through all of the commercials in an hour long show. I also can't keep track of how many times I pause and rewind to catch stuff I missed... that feature alone makes it worth it.

As far as people saying you pay for Tivo, the DVRs come at no extra cost with Dish Network, and I love it. 100 hours each on two TVs for no extra cost... gotta love it.

My DVR was bought through Dish Network. It's freaking awesome. I haven't had a piece of machinery change my life this much since the first fully functional computer I owned. Lots of channels don't have their shows start and stop at exactly the same time slots that they represent. The only way around it is to get to know which channels this happens on (someone mentioned FX) and adjust your recording times as you see fit. I record Nip/Tuck every week, and I just set it to start @ 8:58 pm and record to 9:06 pm just to make sure I get everything. It took like 20 extra seconds of my time after I programmed the timer. Not hard.

But to me, the ability to pause live TV, rewind a show that had parts you might have missed, or keep 100 hours of recorded material in a small, easily accessible box is worth its weight in gold.

Unless this has changed, I think this deal only applies to new subscribers. I've been with DISH network for a while and I had a DVR through them most of that time. But back in May I decided to get another one for a different room and they charged me $100. I didn't compain, I knew it would be worth it.

With Dish's DVR system you can set it up where when you choose a show via to guide to record you can set a "pre-show" and "post show" timer so when you record all shows you can go 10 minutes before and 10 minutes after longer. I know you just mentioned that, but I just wanted to point out that you could do it in the main DVR settings to do this for ALL shows, not just shows with custom timers.

Usually you just need to "reup" on your contract to get the free stuff, they don't want to give you a 200 dollar DVR and then you cancel two months later.

I like to do the exact same thing as your friend. I just pause it at the beginning of a Rockets game, take a shower, go get dinner, do laundry, etc. and then come back to watch it 30-45 minutes later. Thanks to this I can just fast forward through the commercials, and halftime. Now if I could only find a way to fast forward the halftime shows at the games.....

Sorry, but I do this for just about everything EXCEPT sports. I like to know/think that when I am watching a team that "this just happened"... watching sports recorded is a last resort.

No, but Tivo's know if you are saying bad things about them on message boards.

It's nice, but I wonder why everyone is acting like this is changing their lives. Except for little things like keeping it all in the same box (and not having to rewind), we did have a lot of this technology already with VCRs, if anybody actually bothered to program theirs. :) It's been a very long time since I had to be home to watch whatever was on TV. I guess maybe people got DVD players and gave up the VCRs entirely for a while, but it seems like that would be hard to live with... I don't want to choose between watching something special on TV and doing whatever else I'd like to be doing at the time.

I'm American I don’t want to have to work for my entertainment (VCR).. I want it as fast and easy as possible (TIVO).. Besides I don’t think I ever had a VCR that I setup and kept from blinking 12:00 all the time, much less program it to record a show AND I had to change tapes!! What the hell was that about!! :p
