I can sum up my review in one word: boring. I almost walked out of the theater it was that bad. The story views more like a cartoon or video game than a movie, with a bunch of pointless action scenes. The is hardly any meaningful dialogue whatsoever. The only being the reference to marlow and the heart of darkness. In addition, The characters are so not believable in their roles. Let me try to make my point this way: Take Captain Quint in Jaws, or for that matter take any character in that film. These are characters you can believe in, characters who are who they claim to be. In Peter Jackson's King Kong, I don't believe any of the characters are really what they claim to be. All I see is the Hollywood Blockbuster formula plastered across the screen in typical serial-adventure style, i.e. exposition, rising action, climax, etc, etc. It is crazy to me that in 3 hours I can't say I know anything more about these characters than what is on the surface of the film. The most intersting part of this movie for me was the natives at skull island. This was the high point of a rather dull movie for me. I guess I am not in to action adventure, cause if it doesn't have any meaningful dialogue I am going to be bored to tears.
if you're looking for a character study with no care at all for action you totally picked the wrong movie.
That's what I said. I picked the wrong film. I much prefer the smallville approach to telling an often-told story. Perspective is key for me, but I was hoping that King Kong would have more depth. I mean, the basic story has so much metaphorical materiral to work with. It's like watching your basic, run of the mill war flick, and then watching deer hunter or something. There is no comparison. That is what I see in this Kong film. It is the same story, told the same way, with better graphics and a bunch of references. It is movie by "blockbuster" numbers, as in paint.
Add me to the list that absolutely loved this movie. It was fantastic. Namoi Watts was great (and was beautiful) as well. She played the part great. I also thought Kong was so cool. His facial expressions were incredible. Once they got to the Island it was incredible. Peter Jackson is a legend. What is his next project??? This really was a great roller coaster ride. One which I have not experienced at the movies for some time.
Saw it today alone (yes I need to get a life now). Not that great a movie. A bit too long; a bit too predictable (could have tweaked the storyline a bit). Some special effects are just too fake for my likings. Naomi Watts was hot though. Most women in their late 30's aren't this hot.
Not a half bad movie at all, little bit too long, but not that big of a deal. Saw it last night and was pretty damn impressed. Sure, it was a bit predictable and Jack Black's ending line was corny as hell, but a damn good movie overall. Never saw the original of course lol or the 1976 version for that matter, but even knowing the general storyline, was a good movie still.
francis 4 prez, I loved Jurassic Park, but I don't think it had half the coherent story line, acting jobs, and the quality of special effects that Kong has. As for effects, the years between the two films makes a huge difference. I think the better acting (imo) is due to much better actors and, most importantly, to a much better script. Look, I think "JP" was a great popcorn movie, a scary action flick that was a gas. To me, at least, King Kong is just in another class. Maybe having seen the original '33 production several times over the years, starting when I was a kid, like Jackson, made a difference for me. The thing that bugged me the most about Jackson's Kong was his use of slo-mo. He should have tossed all that mess on the cutting room floor. It added nothing, imo, and just served to remind me of the slo-mo he used in Rings (remember the Elves dying at Helm's Deep?) It's a contrivance he didn't need. I'm not concerned about the grosses. The box office is going to be HUGE!
Saw it last night. Good movie, bit too long. **** SPOILERS **** While I do understand that people would be sad because of the ending, I didn't feel thaaat emotional. Maybe I missed something, but Kong must have killed countless amounts of people. While of course it was perhaps humanity that began a hostile relationship between man and beast, I still didn't feel too bad seeing that while Kong was looking for his "girlfriend" he tossed around a few blondes. Dunno, it was a sad circumstance seeing that Kong should have been left in his own environment. Nevertheless, he only showed his good side when regarding his obsession with Watts. I found her quite annoying as well, seeing that 15 people died trying to save her.
yeah but Kong caught an asswhoopin' from 3 T-Rex's trying to save her so it kinda balances out. she just wanted everyone to leave everyone alone.
Hated it! I thought I was watching a friggin' Richard Gear movie with that stupid scene on the frozen lake... ...and I'm sorry, but If I had to put money on King Kong vs. three T-Rexes, I'd have to go with the T-Rexes...
That scene was for the Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude and Steven Segal fans. Seriously it reminded me of King Kong meets Jurassic Park meets Walker Texas Ranger.
Saw this movie on Friday. What fails in this movie is the CGI. Some of those scenes (like the stampede) looked so fake, it makes the actors looks stupid. You can have the best actors available, but if you're not buying what you're seeing, the actors emotions and lines get campy. I am also amazed at how a tiny woman can get swung around like a rag doll and not break into pieces.
My biggest let down was how they got Kong on the boat. I kept thinking, how in the world, then when it's time, Kong magically ends up in NY as if to say, oh yea we "just" took him to NY. The fight scene w/the 3 TRexes was over the top along with the Central Park scene. Other than that, better than I expected, but it was a free movie and I had low expectations.
I'll just have to repeat what was already said: The T-Rex fight was one of the best scenes I've ever seen in a movie theater.
Holy crap, this was one hell of an awesome movie. Definetly the best film I have seen in a long time. The Dinasaur scene while they were running through that alley way had to be the best scene in a movie I have ever seen in my entire life!
I went to see this movie yesterday. I got so bored of it within 15 minutes, and so did my buddy, we walked out and watched Syriana instead.
So then Watts' character = MR. MEOWGI? I see some of you are "hating" it. But I told ya' so... It's a re-re-make for cryin' out loud.
