I have been to an amazing amount of great shows lately--I just wanted to see which concerts everyone else has caught lately too. I guess I've just been indulging myself with tickets to my favorite bands and these last few months have been amazing. Broken Social Scene [Austin] - this has been one of my favorite bands for a couple years, and their live show is unbelievable. They are definitely one of the most talented acts out there. Their music comes in so many shapes and forms, it's beautiful to listen to. Architecture in Helsinki [Austin] - in my opinion one of the most original electropop bands out there today. Bunch of kids from Australia with more than 50 instruments, sometimes making noises off each others' bodies (haha). It's really one of those shows you can't help but dance. Loxsly - If anyone's big on keeping up with the Austin music scene, you've probably heard of them. I saw them with AIH and since then I've been back for a couple shows. I guess they'd be classified under "indie/electronica" but you really can't put a label on this band. Their cd is incredible. If you ever get a chance to see them, CHECK THEM OUT. They'll blow you away. Headphones - David Bazan (Pedro the Lion)'s band Minus the Bear mewithoutYou The Decemberists - amazing, but i almost had too high expectations, to tell the truth :-\ Early 2006: SIGUR ROS, Nodes of Ranvier Hopefully sometime in the near future: Sufjan Stevens, New Pornographers, Broken Spindles, Wilco Who have you seen lately and how were they live?
I've seen The Decemberists and Wilco live this year as well. Other good concerts I've been to have been Death Cab for Cutie, The Bravery, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand,Aqualung, Matisyahu and Damian Marley. I was dissapointed with Snow Patrol though. I was upset My Morning Jacket cancelled in Houston at the last moment. But I got to see them in NYC. Where did you see The Decemberists? I'm kind of in a jam with Sigur Ros in Houston on Feb. 26. That is the same day Coldplay performs, and I unfortunately bought tickets for both shows. Oh and also The Killers were awesome both times I saw this year.
May have already heard, but My Morning Jacket cancelled b/c they were invited to make an ACL taping, so they stuck around Austin for the weekend. I caught the show at La Zona Rosa Thursday night. A friend spotted, and talked with Jim James at a South Austin bowling alley on Saturday night (the Austin Chronicle also reported they were at Beerland that night). Sunday afternoon I was lucky enough to catch the ACL taping.
Those are some really cool bands you guys are getting to see. Speaking of the New Pornographers, my last concert was actually a Neko Case club date here in San Diego. She was really in top form and shined brightly. Her back up band was the Sadies (also played their own set) who I was SERIOUSLY impressed by.
Okerrvil River last week was fricken awesome... it was in a tiny venue, packed and they were bloody amazing anyone know where i can access a gig guide for New York
Rolling Stones - December 1st @ Toyota Center. A great "greatest hits" show from the world's greatest rock & roll band.
Man, I would have loved to see most of the acts that Mr. Brightside mentioned especially Wilco. I know some might laugh but the only concert I was able to go this year was Coldplay and it was great. Chris Martin sings very well live. IIRC, Sigur Ros is coming to Nashville on Valentines Day - that is a must see concert for me!
I saw the OLD 97's about a month ago. They were awesome. I liked them a lot early on, but then they made a concious effort to go away from any sort of country roots, and try for pop songs. Rhet Miller changed his persona. And I stopped following them for a while. But it seems they have made peace with both their pop and country roots, and didn't shy away from any of it at the show. Rhet Miller's transition from country/rock nerd to pretty boy is still there, but it seemed very natural, and they put on one hell of a show. Sadly one of the opening bands was the worst thing I had ever seen. Most of their stuff sounded like Corey Hart or something, and then they tried to cover "Bastards of Young", a Replacements song. As a Replacements fan it was an insult to hear that song done by someone sounding like Corey Hart. I got angry and started shouting obsenities and yelling at the stage. I kind of felt bad, because the band members themselves all seemed like nice folks. It was just that cover in that style was an insult, and I couldn't let it go. That band were the kings of p***y rock. I'm glad that the OLD 97's rescued my soul after having it imprisoned by that other lame band.
I'm looking foward to a Soulhat reunion show tonight at Antones (Austin). I haven't seen them in a few years and it will be great to see the original lineup.
Anybody else notice that the Blasters will be playing the Meridian on January 20th? I checked it out....Phil Alvin will be there, but Dave Alvin will not. Not the original Blasters, but still might be worth seeing, however!
