    Now that's a good story.

Much as I can't stand the no exit strategy president, it looks as if he's finally listening to someone else other than God. He is admitting people have died in this war and he is admitting (though weakly) that things haven't gone smoothly.

    good for him

    You do?

Just so you know, pgabs, the outlay for federal expenditures for the government in FY2005 is within 10% of the receipts figure. Bankrupt? That's hilarious. Best credit in the world? More like it. Learn the facts.

No, we can't leave until the security situation is resolved. The political situation may be improving, but both security and a stable government have to be there before we leave.

I am not so sure we are a magnet for Zarqawi. It seems like Zarqawi is targetting Iraqis more and more. If we leave, I don't think the terrorists will put their guns down and engage in normal politics with the new government.

That is an important point but I'm beginning to wonder how much our own presence is preventing them from stabilizing? The Admin. and many others have said that its a good thing we are fighting the terrorists in Iraq than here and that the terrorists have made Iraq the frontline of the War on Terror. If that's so that is only because of our presence there. I call this the "Roach Motel" strategy, where we make Iraq an inviting target to draw in the terrorists where we can annhilate them. Leaving aside the inherent problems with this strategy for it to work we need to count on radical Muslims looking to fight us to keep on checking into the motel. Obviously in their effort to get our troops they will attack anything they see as supporting us, or benefitting from our presence, or even that just happens to get in the way of getting to us. I think thats what we're seeing in Iraq.

So even if the Roach Motel strategy works and we attract terrorists into Iraq to fight how fair is it to the Iraqis for us to continue to make a war zone of their country? Zarqawi and the like will never lay down their guns and engage in normal politics but there isn't much impetus for him to stay if there aren't American's to attack.

If the Iraqis can establish a democratic society that's great but if our very strategy is to keep fighting our enemies in Iraq then we are making it difficult for the Iraqis to maintain democracy by having a stable society.

Truly fantastic news that the insurgents have turned on Al Queda and there will be free elections in Iraq. Daylight is at the end of this tunnel.

That's fantastic news. Thanks for posting that article Basso. Great to read something positive coming out of that area, for once. I'm sure there have been many other positive things happening but they don't seem to get reported enough. Not "news-worthy" I guess.

I'm really glad to hear about this, I hope they do have a successful election. Perhaps one step closer to bringing our troops home.
