Have any of ya'll heard about plans to erect this hideous monster beyond left field. It's supposed to be a residential/office building with window offices to watch the game. Anyways, here's the renderings. It looks grotesquely out of place, and blocks the view of downtown. I really hope this beast doesn't get built. I hope the Astros close the roof permanently and cover the glass in left field so those bastids are left with their building. ------------------ New Order, Get Ready
the place looks nice. however, it would block a good view of downtown, which would suck. Hopefully they wont build it. ------------------
The thing has been in planning since before the Ballpark opened. I wonder why they haven't started building it yet (lack of interest from potential customers? trouble with financing? something else?) ------------------ Why not visit MovieForums.com? Or FilmDallas.com?
That is one of the stupidest ideas that I've seen. The open area and downtown view was the best thing about the stadium. I could see building resteraunts or even low-rise housing in that spot. Anything but this. ------------------ I'm so amazingly cool you could keep a side of meat in me for a month. I am so hip that I have difficulty seeing over my pelvis.
They've already started pouring the foundation. It has been in the works since the ballpark was proposed. ------------------ How the hell should I know why God would allow the Holocaust. I don't even know how the electric can opener works. - from Hannah and Her Sisters

I'm going to have to disagree with you guys, contingent on how the final thing looks. Why? Cause I've seen different views. Certainly, one might expect the www.ballpark.com view to be the best. But, look at this link (i'll try and post the pic below) http://www.kirksey.com/projectdetail.asp?11|157 Certainly, it doesnt look nearly as bad there. I almost think it looks good. Ive been to a number of games, and, to be honest, the view of downtown isnt really great. Surely, it need not be disregarded and blocked, but how many people are truely going to miss seeing the top of the Chase building or the Wells Fargo Plaza (the two tallest buildings downtown). Don't flame me out here. I certainly still want to see some of downtown, and from the link I've provided, which looks like it comes form a respectable architecture firm, the view is not completely blocked. Also, I think this building will be unique among ballparks. I mean, it will be another "feature" of Enron. Perhaps we have too much already with the misshaped field (short to left and right, extremely deep to center), the Conoco pump, and the hill and flagpole in the outfield. I just think the picture above (if it works) looks kinda soothing in a way. Finally, this building should actually improve the east side of downtown and help with the whoel revitalization project. That is very important to Houstonians, as evidenced by the difficulty in passing the Rocket's referendum and hte stressed placed on revitalization before the last vote. ------------------ I hope, when they die, cartoon characters have to answer for their sins.
Hmmm...exact same link with different picture. Ballpark now moved a little to the left. Does anyone know the exact location of this thing. I disagree that it is hideous and shouldnt be there at all, but the farther left it gets, the more I dislike it. Found one- So it looks like it will be as far left as possible, but it may not be as imposing as the pictures seem cause it will be a block back (where the pictures make it seem to be right next to Union Station). But it will be 34 stories. Ok. I could live without it. But it will still be interesting to see the final product. ------------------ I hope, when they die, cartoon characters have to answer for their sins. One last thing (why not get three posts in a row). Form a sports perspective, what impact will this have on the field shadows. It seems the building will be directly blocking some of the sun. Interesting. ------------------ I hope, when they die, cartoon characters have to answer for their sins.
I will throw a stone through one of the windows in protest. ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater

I'm all for it actually. It doesn't appear to really block a view from right field, and it actually gives you something to look at from left field. When I goto games (like i went to tonight), I sit on the left-field side until they open the roof, when I move to the right field side. The right field side has the good view of downtown. From left field, there is NOTHING to see. Literally nothing. There is one building and that's it. This building will now give you something to look at from left field, and it doesn't block the downtown view from right. I will be interested to see how it effects the wind flow through the stadium when the roof is open though. I bet things get a lot more still. That will suck. ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
Seems to me this is the exact kind of development that all the ballpark referendum supporters (me included) promised the skeptics would make the public money investment worthwhile. My only question is when can I move in??? ------------------
I would imagine that tall buildings next to the stadium would create more air disruption, not less. ------------------
Well, given that the building will be west of the stadium, and given the propensity of baseball games to be played in the P.M. hours... it looke like the building will cast a big friggin shadow over the field. But since the roof is closed most of the time anyway, I guess that's not a big concern. ------------------ I'm so amazingly cool you could keep a side of meat in me for a month. oh well... i guess with it being across the street and that second view, it ain't so bad, but it really isn't needed either... but then again, neither all these other high rises and condos that are being built! argh.. you can't stop 'progress' rH ------------------ INSERT NAIL HERE >> X << FOR NEW MONITOR join the club! I would think so on the sides, but not in that specific area. The wind blows directly towards where the building will be most times. In that case, I'd think it would act as a wind blocker. Now if the building was one lot to the right, I think we'd see more wind. I don't know much about this though. ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
