I know there are many of us in here who are geeks, computer experts, smart alecks, or just like to mess with computer stuff. I'd like to ask what shortcuts you think may be useful for people here on this BBS and on other places that can speed up your productivity and leave more time to play (here on the BBS). They can be for popular programs like IE or FireFox, MS Office or Photoshop, or utility and tool programs like WinAmp or just Windows in general. Someone here in the BBS who also works with me used to get me to go back to my office after wasting time in HIS by just saying: "Hey, isn't there a shortcut you need to do?", and I would promptly leave. I think I can share some that some people never knew existed and am an expert at getting around the Windows environment without a mouse. Allow me to kick it off with a few: Windows: ALT+Space_bar+[letter]: window management (n - minimize, x - maximize, r - restore, m - move) F5: Refresh (applies to most Windows and MS programs, like reloading a web page in IE) F2: rename a file WindowsKey + [letter] : special commands-> ( D: show the desktop for when the boss is coming, E: starts Explorer, Pause/Break: shows the system properties tabsheets, L: locks the system, R: brings up the Run... dialog box) I find many people wasting time when selecting or deleting large text and doing so for every letter. Don't. Use Ctrl key to select or backspace an ENTIRE word instead, it will save you time. Internet Explorer (Windows Explorer as well): Tab - moves selection ants through links, fields, etc. space_bar - presses a button in a form [ENTER] - submits a form when allowed, submits a link when selected with TAB F4 - go to the address bar backspace : BACK in history ALT+[arrow] : LEFT to go back, RIGHT to go forward in history Word shift+F3 : toggle case to Sentence case, Title Case, or ALL UPPERCASE. F7 : Spell Check shift+F7 : find synonyms or antonyms for the word selected F2: MOVE the selected text to another place in the document. You will see "Move to where?" in the status bar while the cursor changes to a dashed pipe. Move the cursor, press enter, and the text will move. shift+F2: sames as F2, but COPY the selected text to another place in the document. You will see "Copy to where?" in the satus bar. Move the cursor, then press [enter] and the text will appear in the new place. You don't need to select a word for Bold, Italic, Underline, etc., just have the cursor in the word, and Word will do the entire word format. You can also select an entire word by holding the Ctrl key and arrowing UP or down with the SHIFT key. For example, to select this entire paragraph, I'd place the cursor on the end of it, hold the shift key, and press UP. To do a word, just combine the Ctrl key. PhotoShop CTRL+Space_bar : zoom IN tool (returns to previous tool when released) CTRL+ALT+Space_bar : zoom OUT tool (same as above) Space_bar : momentarily use the HAND tool (returns to previous tool when released) E : eraser tool V : move tool WinAmp C : pause present media file ============================== I know most software packages have their shortcuts listed in their helpfiles, but I thought I would share some good ones I knew off the top of my head. Share some of your secret shortcuts for those whom you think will help. I have many more and will continue to share as long as you ask for more.
a lot of people also ignore that 'windows' key on your keyboard I use it all the time windows-E : opens windows explorer windows-D: shows desktop, hit again and you'll be right back where you started windows-F: opens the Find dialog windows-R: opens the Run dialog
I'm sure some don't even know the basic ones. In word: ctrl + b = bold ctrl + i = italic ctrl + u = underline in general: ctrl + c = copy ctrl + v = paste ctrl + x = cut
There is also Ctrl + [ or ] to increase your font sizes in Word/Excel/Powerpoint And if you push alt + the underlined letter in your menu bar, you can open those menus without your mouse. (eg. alt + f opens "file")
RESPEK! I didn't know these and will use them all of the time... Windows-l Windows-r Windows-f Windows-e <- previously known but forgotten
If you press Alt + Ctrl + F11 + Z + Del, bash your head on the keyboard 39 times, hold both shift keys down and type out the alphabet... take the letters that are missing and form a fitting anagram that could be used to describe a current Rockets player... take that word and the players name and open a blank notepad file copy it down and hold CTRL + alt + shift for 3 hours then save the file and email it to obl@death2america.net... an email will arrive in about 2 days time... in it you will find inner peace... but more importantly a hidden video of Bill Gates flexing in front of a mirror... completely naked.
On average I think I use ALT + Tab about 578 times a day. If you guys want a nice list of keyboard shortcuts checkout this link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;301583#XSLTH3138121122120121120120
I hate multi buttons to lock my PC even the winL is two too many, if you make a shortcut on your desktop and then browse for the path type add this %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation then under the poperties of the shortcut icon change the "shortcut key" to a key you only want to use to lock your PC I use the * on the number pad.. Now when you want to lock your PC you dont have to do the C/al/del or win/L all you need to do is click the shortcut or hit the * key.. Works great..
Another one everyone should know about....on MS Word, go to Tools>Customize>Commands, then from there you can create your own shortcuts. I've made a number of them since I work in Word so much and hate reaching for the mouse.....
Good point. But doesn't pushing shift+8 (for the * character) takes just as much effort as pushing win+L?
