At the end of this month (the 30th to be exact), I am leaving the U.S. to go to Athens, Greece to meet a friend. I am staying at the Grecotel Imperial Hotel which is located on the Karaiskaki Square and plan on using the metro to go to things. I have already planned to go see the Acropolis and the Parthenon but I'll be in Athens for 12 days . I don't know what else to see or do. I am hoping someone here has been to Athens and can guide me on the sites to see and the things to do in this great city. Thanks in advance.
Athens is a cool town, just stay near the Plaka...definitely check out the first modern olympic stadium; pull a Republic and go down to Pireaus (the port where Socrates goes in the Republic); The Parthenon is sweet; if you can make any side trips check out Delphi; Are you going alone? If not, you guys should definitely have a gyro eating contest; I think the winner in our class ate something like 43 of them...It's a fun town, hope you like marble...
Thanks - isn't Delphi like 40 minutes or so from Athens? It is definitely a place I would like to check out - maybe the metro can take you there (don't know, that is why I am asking)?
Delphi's like 2-3 hours away through rugged windy mountain terrain...IT's awesome though; on the axis of two fault lines, hike to the top of the mountain; I had to pee 2/3 of the way up which made the oracle mad and she told Zeus who sent a rain cloud complete with lightning bolts; It was freaky; we were climbing in the middle of a thunderstorm cloud....Definitely try the Chocolate Milk, Milko, it's awesome; you might want to plan some trips to Agamemnon's House, Corinth, Napflion, a Greek Isle....Go swimming in the Aegean!
Okay, I leave for Athens in less than 4 hours. I will probably go to Delphi as well as possibly Crete. I won't be back until the 11th of January and it is doubtful that I will have internet access while I am gone. Hope everyone has a good and safe new year. Peace out.
internet cafe's are a travelers friend. i just got back from a 12 day europe trip myself, but still managed to get on here most everyday. i was even charging up my ipod there.
Greece is awesome. If you get this, Manny, I second the idea of going to the Greek Isles....they're all gorgeous.
