A million here, a million there...pretty soon you got a real Holocaust. 6 million has become the consensus description, the historical number. The point is to illustrate the scope of the event. The actual number has no more value than the historical number, most people accept that it was a massive extermination of human beings primarily directed at one religion but not exclusive to them. It is evidence of the worst of mankinds capacity.
I think Basso's response would be that ignoring the ethnic clensing and suffering of the Iraqi people under Saddam's regime is similar to ignoring the concentration camps in Europe. But I have a pretty bad record of trying to read fellow clutchfan's minds. So that's just pure (probably bad) speculation.
The holocaust is a fact and if anyone seriously denies this I recommend they visit the site of a former concentration camp in Germany, as most German high school classes do as an educational measure.
Yup and its also pretty much illegal to make any direct references to Nazis. Although amazingly enough in Bavaria some neo-nazis actually won some local parliament seats for the first time since Hitler's collapse.
Both statements are incorrect. It is not illegal to make references to Nazis. It is illegal to deny that the holocaust happened, and (to simplify it) it is illegal to praise the Nazis. There are no neo-nazis in the Bavarian parliament. There are some very right-wing groups which have won seats in local governments or possibly on the state level, but much less so than, e.g., in France or Italy.
I was referring to political parties and their references to neo-nazis as a justification for election. Obviously you can discuss nazism but you can't praise them as you said. Sorry if I didnt articulate that very well. As for the election issue, a couple of years ago some right wing legislators got elected to the bavarian and other state parliaments that in some campaign speeches made some references to the "positive aspects" of nazism. The German government made them retract everything they said in favor of nazism but the point of the argument was to illustrate the level of dissent and unhappiness in certain parts of the country and how extreme right wing groups are making small amounts of headway. Here are a couple of links http://www.un.org/Pubs/chronicle/2004/issue4/0404p32.html http://medienkritik.typepad.com/blog/2004/09/extremists_make.html
actually, my response, in so far as Sam's comment deserves one, is that finding oneself on the side of a hitler wannabe in a holocaust thread tanget, must tilt the irony meter.
Basso, I am not really sure I see the purpose of the question you posed, so I am not positive as to what response you were expecting/seeking. Were you seeking a straight-to-the-point answer on whether or not the Holocaust took place? If so, there's overwhelming historical evidence (hard and circumstantial) that it did absolutely take place. On the other hand, if you were more interested in the numbers aspect of it (which your actual question seems to indicate, while the title of the thread confuses matters somewhat), then no one knows for sure, because accounts do vary. Regardless, I don't think it matters much as to how many were killed as opposed to the pure evil of those who perpetrated it, and how can we make sure that such systematic destruction of human life would never again be tolerated.
I heard Hitler staged his death and still walks amongst us. Hmmm, I'm gonna find him on myspace to confirm this theory, be back in a bit.
It's True!!! He is still alive. Found him on myspace here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cf...4BC18DC4-0A65-432D-9A4005CF721EDBDF1421492093 It seems history is making an interesting turn? Any thoughts? Questions? Comments?
the point was/is that there are holocaust deniers amongst us, including Iran's new president, and reuters seems to be willing to give him them benefit of the doubt. i wondered how widespread that view was, and it appears from this poll that it's a fairly widely held view, and one that cuts across the political spectrum. I find that astounding, reprehensible, and tragic.
Hitler wannabe? Last time I checked, you were the one with your lips firmly planted on Dick....Cheney. And were you calling in to sports radio talk shows during the 80's during the gassing of Halabja? I'm going to guess no. Did you even register your discontent with the Reagan/Bush administrations that enabled it by not voting for them? Again, I'm going to guess no. Maybe I will get a post-mortem conscience like you one day. I'm sure all of the dead appreciate your basketball-bulletin board memorialization of their sacrifice 17 years later. Basso = moral compass
in '80 i campaigned for, and voted for, John not Jon Anderson. in '84, in a fit of voting booth pique i voted for lorna fulani, so guess again.
When i was in israel i went to the Holocaust museum. Afterwarts i didn't speak for about a hour. i never saw anything like that. Unbelievable.
