So, I was checking out my account online and saw a check for a weird amount. Clicked to view the check, and it was my rent check. The amount that was taken out of my account (not pending) was a lot less than the amount the check for which the check was written. Question is, who do I go to first to correct this? Part of me wants to see if they'll just let it slide, but that's not very ethical.
This actually could be a crappy situation, RM. Because they might come back to you with some late fees for not paying your rent in full. So you will have to produce proff that you wrote and submitted the full amount, but it was a banking error somewhere along the way. Hopefully they aren't aholes and try to force the blame on you. I'd start off with the local office to see what procedures are. Good luck!
Well, if you click on the check number online, it's a scanned version of the actual check. It's clearly written out for the right amount. But yeah, the chances of an apartment complex and a bank not being assholes are right there with the Texans making the playoffs.
Once upon a time (well before the Internet) I wrote a check to Tenneco (gas bill) for $70.92. Imagine my surprise when I got my monthly statement and there was a $709.20 debit. From looking at the check it was encoded wrong, somebody typed an extra 0 and the magnetic numbers on the bottom right of the check were incorrect. It is possible something like that happened to you (except in your favor). I would certainly call the bank and straighten things out.
RM- Yea, that would be excellent proof. But, I work for a bank, and this happens more often than it should. Sometimes, when the scanner doesn't read the totals correctly, it is manually keyed, and is prone to human error.
I hope I don't derail this thread but....... Time Warner Cable only charged me for cable and not internet this month. 50 bucks difference. Should I just pay the smaller bill or say something?
First go to the bank. That is where the problem originated. Make sure you get them to document that you did everything correctly. The apartment folks may have the correct amount in their account. They certainly had your check and know you did everything right as well. If anything, their beef is with your bank, not with you. Have you had another look at the check to see if the numbers on the bottom right are encoded correctly?
sbc yahoo did the same for me, usually i get internet and a phone bill on the same paper, this time it was only fone free internet month i guess.
They are not. So, do you have more integrity if you go to the bank first or go to the apartment complex first?
That is proof that a human screwed up. Be prepared for the bank to say "it's not our fault, it was the processing center." I think Trader_Jorge was responding to other posters, not to you.
No problem. I went through a similar situation, although I was the one hosed, about 20 years ago. It cost me a couple of bounced checks but they got straightened out. Back in the old days it was hard to have an unexpected $700 debit!
actually, if your dsl bill is close to the closing date of the previous month of your phone bill, you'll get charged twice for dsl on your next bill. it happens to me twice a year.
