certainly disquieting news, both for the potential of a nuclear armed iran, and what might have to be done about it.

El Baradei: Iran only months away from a bomb
JPost.com Staff, THE JERUSALEM POST Dec. 5, 2005

IAEA chairman Muhammad ElBaradei on Monday confirmed Israel's assessment that Iran is only a few months away from creating an atomic bomb.

If Teheran indeed resumed its uranium enrichment in other plants, as threatened, it will take it only "a few months" to produce a nuclear bomb, El-Baradei told The Independent.

On the other hand, he warned, any attempt to resolve the crisis by non-diplomatic means would "open a Pandora's box. There would be efforts to isolate Iran; Iran would retaliate; and at the end of the day you have to go back to the negotiating table to find the solution."

a preemptive israeli strike would be far more difficult now than it was in 1981. unlike iraq's, Iran's nuclear sites are dispersed, and heavily guarded with surface-to-air missles. moreover, since israeli planes would have to fly over iraq to get to iran, such an attack would at a minimum require a US ok. and if the US is going to OK the attack, we might just decide to participate- in for a penny, in for a pound.

    Not good.

Sorry for the tangent but this strikes me as another example of how the invasion of Iraq has backfired. We went in because of a threat of WMD and also with the belief that our example would cow others from seeking WMD. Instead its only spurred Iran and NK to speed up their programs.

I don't think Iran should be allowed to have nuclear weapons.

Liberals, it's time to start formulating plans for how to declare defeat, cut and run, and demoralize our soldiers. (best to get a head start on it)

Why? You haven't been able to provide any proof that any of the liberals on this board have ever done such a thing yet.

In a lot of ways I agree. But who are we to say who can have them and who can't?

I'm going to suggest that N Korea and Iran were working on Nukes long before George W. was elected President and were going to work on them regardless of who was president. Nukes give those countries leverage with many more countries than just the U.S. (Israel for example).

Also didn't N. Korea pull a scam on the U.S and U.N. in the 90's to get the very nuclear reactors they are using to refine the necessary uranium?

You can argue that George W. was the straw that made Iran and N. Korea come out into the OPEN with regards to their program (you could also argue that he was the final straw that motovated Ghadafi to stop his program).

It is without a doubt a tough call, but in this case I think the choice is clear.

Because under normal adminis..circumstances, the world looks to the US to provide balance to rouge threats...the de facto policeman if you will.

Some may argue that the UN is/should be, but it's always 1,000's of innocent deaths too late.

Then both posed a more viable threat to America than Iraq did. And now we have our military resources spread so thin that, even if provoked, we can't do a damn thing about it. Do you think Iran and N. Korea don't know that?

We already defeated ourselves when we blew our wad in Iraq in order to strengthen Iran's position.

I still marvel at the stupidity of our leaders. still.
