It is fishy, no doubt. This guy appears to be a scumbag and is politically done for (at least by next election). But let's see all the facts before deciding whether he is criminal.
And KG, no, Bill Gates or Ross Perot would not be kicked out of their current/former companies for having an affair with an intern. Maybe their subordinates would, but they would NOT, no question about it. This argument does not hold water. Again, the Senate and Congress would be half empty if affairs or having children out of wedlock were litmus tests.
Desert Scar -- i may be way off here...but are you confusing CEO with owner??? I'm betting that if Michael Eisner were in the very position that Gary Condit is in right now (or even the one Bill Clinton was in with Lewinsky), he'd be toast with Disney!! He'd be out of a job damn quick! As soon as it hit the press, he'd be out. ------------------
Yep, you are right. "Its good to be the King" is what Gates and Perot would say. Let me amend my statement to read- any Vice President of a major corporation would be fired for banging 24 year old interns if their affairs made the company look bad. Also, women's rights groups like NOW consider what Condit did to be sexual harassment (using his powerful position to seduce a young subordinate)- unless the offender votes their way in Congress. ------------------
His name says it all people "Conned-It" ------------------ Reactions after The Rockets got Eddie Griffin for 3 draft picks "Eddie For 3 ... Yes!!! O Mother!!!!!!!"
MM, I believe Perot and Gates were CEOs. They may or may not have had enough individual stock to also have a controlling interest in their companies, but their companies were "public". You could also throw in Steve Jobs (who I a pretty sure never had controlling interest by himself) or Larry Oracle or Warren Buffet to the list and I think the same thing would apply. Point is, for tip-top leaders (versus subordinates, e.g., fall guys), if they are doing a good job in public/business matters, an affair would not ruin them. Couple the affair with abuse, harassment or illegal activities, you have a different story. I am not sure if NOW has said anything about Condut. But sure, they would be easier on their political allis than on foes. It is not like the Christian Right would not tend to overlook the sexual follies of senators that support most of their causes but try to crucify the same actions done by their political adversaries. Such is the nasty business of politics.
The question is not about an affair. It's about an affair with a subordinate. And it really would depend on the Board of that company, what that CEO means to the company (Microsoft isn't Microsoft without Gates, for example), etc. But the question is faulty anyway. The original point was supposed to be that having an affair with a subordinate is sexual harrassment, but it's not really harrassment until the woman/subordinate thinks it's sexual harrassment, at least not in practice. (Some strident activists will say differently, but in the real world, you can't have sexual harrassment until the "victim" feels she's harrassed because the current definition includes the phrase "unwanted"). ------------------ Why not visit MovieForums.com?
