I didn't include Troy Patton because I think it would be a runaway and also I don't see them giving him up.

I voted Qualls, but I have no problem dealing him if he can get a proven bat in return.

I didn't vote because I can't pick between Backe or Qualls. But losing either of them would, I think, hurt much more than losing Burke or Lane.

I voted Backe, but that is just because I like the guy so much. I love players with as much passion as he has.

However, if giving him up meant we could get a good bat, then I think I would do it.

I voted Qualls, pitching like that is hard to find.

Really? Considering that Billy Wagner, Octavio Dotel, Brad Lidge, and Dan Wheeler have all had MUCH better full seasons than this guy... and they've all pitched for us.... and considering that EVERY MLB TEAM has at least one relief pitcher with the same accomplishments/tools as Qualls, is it that hard to find?

it's not what he's done...it's what we think he's capable of doing in the future. like looking at lidge 2 years ago.

I think its asking A LOT from this guy to come close to matching Lidge as a closer.

Look at Lidge's #'s when he was the 7th inning guy in 2003 (which was his first year in the league), and compare it to Qualls from this past year. While Qualls had a slight edge in ERA, Lidge was striking out guys at 10.27/9 innings (Qualls was at 6.78). Also, the batting average against Lidge in 2003 was .202, and for Qualls this year it was at .249.

Qualls is solid... and his style sort of reminds me of Derek Lowe... but like Dotel, he doesn't have a dominant strikeout pitch, yet he still manages to get a good amount of K's. That style of pitching works wonders in the 7th and 8th innings, but in the 9th... when a batter is at his highest focus and concentration... that sort of pitching can have big-time holes.

i'm not saying he'll match lidge. i'm saying that's where we are with his development. similar to lidge in 2003.

I voted Backe. Assuming that Bagwell comes back, Berkman will stay in the outfield and there will be no place for Burke as a regular starter barring injury. If we do make a trade, it will likely be for a corner outfielder I would think thus making Jason Lane expendable. Lidge and Wheeler will still make our bullpen viable and we could find another guy to pitch the 7th inning to replace Qualls, although it would still be a hit to our bullpen. Backe will have an important role as a starter on this team, unless Astacio, Rodriguez, Nieve, or any other pitcher that comes out of nowhere are ready to step into the rotation. Without Clemens it is a no brainer. With Clemens, it would depend on how the organization feels about Astacio and Rodriguez.

Exactly, I'd hate to see mr. chemistry leave the ball club. Plus, he has been a good mr. October.
