I can't imagine him referring to the offseason in general. "Yeah, we're not going to do much, but it should be exciting to watch what the other 29 teams are doing!"
that's funny!!! but i mean...i don't know what question was asked of him. what if the question was, "hey...it's been a pretty slow offseason so far. what do ya think??" then his response can be very general...not astro-specific.
"It's early for things to get rolling, but by the time the painting starts next week and through the drying process you're going to see some exciting things." --Drayton McLane discussing his kitchen walls
The only difference with what Clemens is doing and what Beltran did is Clemens is being absolutely upfront with the team, it seems. He's pretty much said to not wait on him; go make the uprades and if I like what the team has done, I'll be back. So not only would the team look like fools for another wasted offseason, but they would come off completely inept and clueless after the person in question told you his decision could take awhile and to NOT WAIT. I better hear some good things soon.
Not gonna be Giles. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2242891 Free agent outfielder Brian Giles has reached preliminary agreement to return to the San Diego Padres. Giles, who initially turned down a three-year, $25.5 million deal from the Padres, agreed to a three-year contract worth $30 million. The Toronto Sun reported Tuesday that the Toronto Blue Jays had made a five-year, $55 million offer to Giles, a story that general manager J.P. Ricciardi refuted
If this holds to be true, I have to really fault the Astros for not being in on this. First, Giles is the exact type of player the Astros need. He hits for good average and has a high on base percentage. He also wont kill you defensively. Second, I was completely under the misunderstanding that Giles was looking for a big long term committment, say 6 yrs 55-65 million dollar range. If that were the case, then I dont fault the Astros for not being involved. Come on Stros' we need to build on last years team.
Was Moises Alou ever serious about coming back to the Stros? I remember a rumor about that a while ago, when we weren't doing so good this past season. If he could stay healthy, and was available he would be a nice pick up for some offense.
There's no way we couldve gotten Giles with the Blue Jays suddenly overpaying everyone. (and offering a longer term contract to a guy everyone says is on the older side) They've decided to join the Mets in completely messing up the free agent market by overbidding on everyone. Obviously, if he turned down the Blue Jays's money, there's no reason he'd take whatever we offered. I guess he probably decided to settle down in San Diego.
How do you know they weren't? Giles was born & raised in San Diego and by most accounts turned down a larger/longer contract to stay there. Why ask "why?", just let the knee jerk.
I don't hold us accountable for losing guys to their current teams. I think for MOST guys, they would like to stay put if the money is comparable...especially a guy like Giles who didn't have an issue with the management and is on a decent team as it is.
If Abreu and Manny are being actively shopped, I just hope we are making a strong run at one or the other. I also hope we make an offer to Molina. Regardless if what Roger says about wanting Ausmus, Molina will be here years after Roger retires.
