on a freaking roll or what? Every time I watch highlights, there he is. His swings look so sweet and effortless that you think the ball will die in the outfield...but NO! the ball keeps going off his bat in such an uncanny way that it totally astounds you..Is Berkman the surprise star in baseball right now?..I've got to think so!

He's smoking for sure. I think Albert Pujols is a bigger surprise to the league though. Maybe Roy Oswalt a little bit.

Berkman looks a lot like WWF/WCWs Shane McMahon to me.

I agree Pujols is the biggest surprise this year but Berkman is definitly up there. He had a real good year last year and still not very many people new of him,and I was really scared he was going to be one of those guys that had a good year then never heard from him again.Guess I was wrong!!!

    2 - 2 count. 2 outs. bases loaded.

Berkman singles to center. Two runs score.

    The hitting streak continues!!!

    Berkman the Badass! Go Stros!

Anybody think Berkman runs like a girl when he's running off the field ? He always has this smirk on his face, lol.

Why is Pujols any more of a surprise than Berkman??? Are you serious?? This guy is among the top 3 in average and among all league leaders in homeruns, RBI's, on-base, and slugging. Plus he's been much better than expected from a defensive standpoint. If the 'stros keep winning...let's say they win the division...and Berkman can look back on a season with these kinds of stats (plus a lengthy hitting streak -- God knows when that will end!) he will be within the top 4 in MVP voting. In his freaking first full season as a starter!!! He is easily the biggest surprise in the NL this year.

Pujols came directly from Class A (one A) ball this year, therefore nobody knew what to expect, thus he is a "surprise".

    Berkman vs Pujols

I don't think many doubted Berkman was going to be a stud after last season. I didn't expect anything on THIS order... but I would have been surprised if he hadn't been a successful player.

Pujols is younger, skipped the higher minor leagues, and is an infielder. If anyone had told me that the Cardinals would have a 3rd baseman with a 981 OPS and a Cy Young candidate and that they wouldn't make the playoffs, I would have laughed. Seemed like their biggest holes... funny how injuries will kill teams...

Stros are HOT rite now. BTW, this was Elarton's best pitching performance in awhile. It's about time Dierker let the Stros retaliate over hit batsmen.

Speaking of Berkman, did anyone read the chronicle, today? Sounds like they're already preparing to let him go when his contract is up. Grr...

That is just plain wrong. If he has another couple of seasons like this, wouldn't he be more important than Bags ???

Besides, he isn't arbitration eligible yet. He has a long way to go before he becomes a free agent.

I didn't get that impression at all. It said he and Hidalgo will be around for a long time.

Just me being paranoid, really. I was speaking half-tongue-in cheek :p. Guess I need smilies all the time, after all... know how thefreak feels, now!

Calm down guys... I half=thought there was a bit of "preparing" for not all of the rookies being kept.

They emphasized that this Lane fellow was similar to Berkman. Then the article mentioned the Astros not being able to spend excessive amounts of money and needing to continually produce good rookies to make up for departing veterans (presumably). I doubt it means anything... but heck, I'm bitter after Hampton.
