As we have seen a much improved Offensive line the last few games, the offeensive results are still piss poor. We might be noticing how gun shy Carr really is. He can't find the second option and always looked at the receiver he is throwing to. He makes horrible decisions. I wonder....why not bench him?????? I wonder how effective Banks would be in the same situations!! If Harrington is benched for being ineffective, than why isn't Carr yet??
You do realize that Tony Banks holds the NFL record for most fumbles in a single season don't you. Jeff Garcia is an insurance signing so if Harrington sucks or gets injured there isn't much of a drop off. Tony Banks is more of a "I hope we don't have to have this guy in the game" type backup. Carr is your #1 pick and supposed franchise QB, you may as well live and die with him for the rest of the season.
Several reasons. 1.) First and foremost, Carr has been substantially better than Harrington in each of the four seasons. Carr's QB rating, by year: 62.5, 69.5, 83.5, 75.0. Harrington's QB rating, by year: 59.9, 63.9, 77.5, 68.6. Not all that close. 2.) Higher expectations. Harrington has a better offensive line (still bad, but signifcantly better than ours). He has one of the best pass-catching tight ends in the league, and three incredible talents at wide receiver. Carr has arguably the worst tight ends in the league and only one elite talent at wide receiver. Given the surrounding talent, Harrington should be doing better than Carr... the fact that he's doing worse while having higher expectations makes it a very different scenario. 3.) How much did Detroit really improve after benching Harrington today? It's very simplistic to blame the QB (the big name) and ignore the problems of the team as a whole. Detroit benched Harrington and essentially gained nothing other than a late garbage time touchdown after Atlanta had called off the dogs. If anything, Detroit's quick hook on Harrington today should be a lesson that problems with bad teams run much, much deeper than the man behind center. Also, for someone who supposedly makes so many "horrible" decisions, it's worth noting that Carr only has one game with more than one interception all year long, and that was way back in week one. Furthermore, the offensive line isn't really "improved." It's merely an adjustment from the coaching staff to give Carr more 3-step drops and fewer 5-7 step drops. As a result, the reads have to come very quickly and there often isn't time to go through multiple options. The Texans have basically gone back to the offense of their second season - throw the ball as quickly as possible to avoid sacks. The offensive line isn't any better... the system is all that's changed. David Carr, Tony Banks, Joey Harrington... it doesn't matter. Carson Palmer, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning... it still doesn't matter. When you have one of the worst offensive lines in the history of the sport, no pass-catching tight end, only one legit WR threat (who has been hurt for much of the year) and a mediocre running game, the offense is going to be piss poor almost regardless of who is back there.
Carr has amazed a lot of people when he has been given time. He can get the ball in the right place for a receiver to get. Carr needs an offensive line. And that is what the Texans should proritize. Defense, receivers, running backs, quarterbacks upgrades should all take a backseat to - "THE OFFENSIVE LINE REBUILDING"!!!!! There is little question the Texans made the right choice between Carr and Harrington. As pointed out before, Harrington has the weapons around him, and he is still playing poorly. Carr still has glimpses of brilliance when he is given a chance by the offensive line.
Yeah... screw those excuses... he oughta be putting up Carson Palmer numbers, despite the fact that his surrounding talent is about ten times worse! The bum... excuses. If Carr has the same team around him eight years from now, I'll still be saying the same things. There is no "time" where excuses run out when the surrounding talent is this awful. Give him the opportunity to play with a real team, then judge.
The Cat is his main fan. Even if car throws the ball in the dirt on a simple out route (which he did several times in the KC game) the cat will blame it on his surrounding talent. The Cat may be right, but I just don't see it. Time will tell.
Much improved offensive line, huh? They're throwing 5 yard outs and getting them intercepted and run back for TDs. It takes about a half second for Carr to drop back 2 steps and throw the out. Every time they get in third and long, obvious passing situations, and go downfield, Carr is running for his life back there. That line can't pass protect against a Divison II defense. Carr ain't the problem. Joe Theissman, former Super Bowl QB, told us that.
Detriot Lions are 4-7 and rumors has it that Mariucci might be fired by FRIDAY. How come CAPER hasnt been fired yet? The Texans are screwed up from top to bottom .....
I think the organization does not want to screw with their plans of getting the first pick, what if they bench Carr and they start winning games! That would be bad strategy.
I watched Harrington vs. Atlanta and he looked pretty good to me. His receivers dropped everything and the offensive line was a seive but he made every type of throw and hit is receivers in the right spot most of the time. Detroit being bad isn't really his fault. No quarterback can be good without the other 10 players doing their part, Ask Archie Manning, ask Farve this year. I still think Carr does not have the field awareness to be a great quarterback, not finding open reveivers and not feeling the rush; but maybe if the other 10 guys were better he would be adequate or even good. How do you know?
Carr has weapons around him. AJ, DD, DA, JG. His line might not be all that great, but Carr hasnt showed flashes of being so either. Give Tony Banks the keys for one game and see what happens. Thats the only solution to the David Carr debate. Carr has no one pushing him for his job and he also has a lgion of fans that seem to want to point the problem in every direction except for David Carr. Throwing into triple coverage is not the Lines fault. Throwing te ball into the dirt is not the lines fault. He will get credit when he earns it. He has earned the reptuation of being tough. Is he above critiscm like Brett Favre is? Hell no, why do so many people continue to baby-fy him? He has alot that he needs to improve on. No one is above critiscm on this squad. NO ONE!
This thread and some posts within it are based on the strategy of WWLD? "What Would Lions Do?" Not exactly a franchise blazing new trails for the NFL.
