So after a few games he is without a doubt our most consistant scoring guard. I think he needs a spot in the starting 5 and with that will be in the debate for rookie of the year which would be quite impressive for houston. We have not had a great track record with the draft.
I think he deserves more shots than DA and Wesley - and I hate that those "vets" are allowed to make critical mistakes, but every time Head makes one bad move he gets pulled
I say Luther should be starting at the 2 with Tmac out right now. If Anderson keeps playing like he has the last 3 games I can see Anderson starting at the 2 with Tmac healthy and Luther getting big backup minutes. Either way it goes I think he should remain a big part of the rotation. I'm ecstatic with his play as a starter thus far though.
I want him to shoot a lot more and find his own shot (JVG, you listening, create some plays just made for him besides the wide open 3 point shot). I would also like to see him penetrate to the hoops a lot more to get more FTs.
i would love to see JVG sue luther in a pick and roll play with yao or stro. even a pick and pop with Jho. that might free up the lane for him to drive in. let him come off of those screens that we set for wesley. this kid can score the ball and it seems that no one on the team except for yao (da is coming along) can do that. when tmac gets back i would like to see head start at the 2 and wesley at the 1.
luther plays well with the talent of the starting lineup, and derek anderson can play well being the main guard out there ... it may work to consistently start luther and have anderson off the bench for a nice offensive second unit... but i think we all agree that luther's still a rookie...he is good but you'll see some weird passing from him and some poor decisions especially when he tries to create on his own and nobody knows what he's doing ... it's ok he'll learn, but i think he needs starters around him to play under control and learn the most
How about this starting lineup when T-Mac comes back C-Yao Ming PF-Stro Swift SF-T-Mac SG-Luther Head PG-Rafer Alston Or you could take out Rafer and put in Derek and let T-Mac handle the ball.
Luther has the talent to be a good PG. His ballhanding is good and he can learn a lot to become a good passer as well. When we look at the starting season of Alston... PG: Head SG: Anderson SF: Mac Grady PF: Swift C: Yao This could be quickly the best starting five.
As I mentioned in another thread, Luther is a textbook case for why non-lottery picks should remain in college for four years. This guy benefitted greatly and is a solid, confident, polished pro only a month into his rookie season. Sure, he'll make some typical rookie mistakes now and then, but he doesn't seem lost like a lot of rooks who make the jump early.
I would rather have DA as the starting pg and head at shooting guard on offense and then vice versa on defense where head defends the point guard. It at least gives us some quickness with head and length with DA.
The only problem with non-lottery picks staying in college is that 90% of them are told they'll be lottery picks. After they don't become lottery picks, it's too late to return to college & play ball.
I'm not giving up on Alston yet. Head IMHO should start at the shooting guard. He provides offense as well as defense. DA is taller and can get 20+ minutes backing up both Head and T-Mac. Bowen can sit on the bench while a particular situation calls for him.
start or sub Head should get significant minutes and continue learning the system and how to develop chemistry with the other players. Much better results than what was being said during summer league, with some saying Head was going to Austin. I am so happy he is producing. He should be rock solid by the playoffs.
