I used to live in Homestead Florida and visited this place. I saw it again last night on TLC and thought you'all might have some interest in it. Here is a link, I'm not sure if there is better info out there, but I can tell you this castle has baffled modern science in much the same way as the pyramids. Very interesting story. Amazing stuff.

I saw the show you were talking about not too long ago and it really is amazing. They showed pictures from within the structure and it's every bit as incredible as anything the Egyptians did. Simply incredible stuff!

I never heard of this before. That is truly bizarre.

two things they did not emphasize in the article include...

He built the castle for a woman he loved. However, she never once came to visit his achievement or him.

Science can't find one tool mark on the coral. They have no idea how the blocks were cut or moved by one scrawny little man.

I'm always amazed that people knew he was doing amazing feats right under their noses, but they still couldn't figure out how he was doing it.

If you like this sort of thing, you may want to check out a book called "Finger Prints of the Gods" by Graham Hancock. It deals with the anomolies of the Pyramids in Egypt and Mexico among many other things.

It is not something I would normally read but I swiped it off of Hardwood's bookshelf and couldn't put it down.

Stories like this are so cool. It would be incredible to know how all of these things (Stonehenge, the Pyramids, etc) were actually created.

I love mysterious places like this. Has anyone ever been to the vortex in Oregon?

I saw a show on the Coral Castle. Witnesses swear they saw the guy using levitation to move the stones. Wasn't he using some kind of pyramid power or something. He had been fascinated with the pyramids and claimed t have discovered their secret. He mostly worked at night for privacy (or heat relief).

ZRB -- have you been there? Was it as strange as described in that article?

The "vortex" that causes people to appear at different heights, to my knowledge, is an optical illusion that can be done via pen and paper. This is if I understand the premise of the "trick". As a matter of fact there is a place somewhere in the San Marcos (and of course I can't remember the name of the place) area that does something similar, although not the exact same trick using optical illusions.

Yes I have been there and I can tell you that it is NOT, I repeat, NOT, a trick. If you were to enter the house of mystery, you could tell it was not a trick.

The one problem with the demonstration was that the tour guide kept using two people that were vastly different heights to show the effect of the vortex. So even when the heights changed, the taller person still appeared tall, making it diffficult to tell what was going on. Still, there was a difference, and the effect is very much real.

I wouldn't make the trip from Texas, but if you're ever passing through Gold Hill, I suggest you check it out.

Notice the slope of the "House of Mystery". That is the optical illusion... it is what makes taller people on the right seem shorter. It's an ancient trick. Now if there's something inside that house, I have no idea, but the trick of varying heights in front of the house has been a carnival trick and optical illusion for hundreds of years.

I managed to dig the following link up that you can use to see exactly what is going on with the platform in front of the Mystery House.

    http://www.open.org/~cowanm/skeptics/

The height of the two bodies in there are practically equal once the red body reaches the far right and the blue body reaches the far left, but in reality the blue body is larger. The blue appears even larger once it is at the far right end. Look at the slope of the diagonal lines. The Mystery House's slope/slant/tilt provides the same effect to fool the eyes in Oregon.

    As stated before... optical illusion.

Now, ZRB, tell us something about what goes on inside that Mystery House. I've heard of weird phenomena inside.

If you stand on the slope of the mystery house, it will feel as though you are standing erect, but you're actually tilting sideways. If you put a marble on what appears to be a level slope, it will roll across as if it was rolling downwards. It's hard to describe, but I'm telling you, this is real. The height difference wasn't just demonstrated in front of the house, so it is very real.

Read the article... the pulling/tilting effect is explained in there as well. When you think you're standing straight up, you're not. Again, the illusion is fooling your eyes into thinking you're standing upright. Your phrase "what appears to be a level slope" is the key.

Something tells me you're in awe when attending carnivals, ZRB. [IMG]

The Coral Castle is amazing... the vortex hocus pocus ain't. [IMG]
