He may want out of Portland I am willing to have a warrior like this playing for the Rockets, I think it is exaclty what this team needs, and TMac and Yao would keep him in line... Thoughts? DD
I don't know. To me it looks like this team doesn't have a clue on offense. It's like they're playing summer league ball.
Have you seen the guys that come out of Portland E.G. see D.A. they obviously are smokein it up bc when DA came here he blows. No way do I want a head case like Patterson no way.
Absolut, anyone? "Patterson, who declared last year he had given up alcohol, has become known for off-court incidents. In 2001, Patterson pleaded guilty in the state of Washington to an attempted rape charge for allegedly forcing his children's 24-year-old nanny to perform a sex act. Patterson had to register as a sex offender in Oregon and was suspended for the first five games of the following season by the NBA. In February 2001, he was convicted of misdemeanor assault for attacking a man who scratched his car outside a Cleveland night club. In November 2002, he was arrested on felony domestic abuse charges. His wife, Shannon Patterson, later dropped the charges, but the couple divorced" Do you really think we should acquire a guy with this much baggage? We have enough problems on the court. The last thing we'd need is to start having problems off the court as well.
I've been in Portland since 2002. He's been solid the last two years both on the court and off (at least he's not making headlines). He's easily their best effort player, and has worked hard throughout the fiasco-plagued trailblazer drama. he's quality IMHO, and super talented defensively. Offensively, he's inconsistent. Defensively, he changes games.
DD, Ruben Patterson is somebody I don't want around. He forced a woman to give him head and got a misdemeanor assault charge for it. I don't care if TMac and Yao could get RP to go to church every Sunday. -P1st, S2nd
I am aware of his reputation as "Kobe Stopper" on defense and that "He doesn't back down from anyone". However, when you also don't back down from your coach (why do you think he's being benched right now by MacMillan, and got into confrontations with Cheeks last year?) and your teammates (remember when he got into a fight with Randolph and Woods and had his eye socket borken in 2003?), then you have a problem, even if you ignore his other off court problems. I don't care how much talent he has. There are more talented players than him who went to the scrap heap because of character issues.
he would surely help our perimeter defense (or lack there of). not much on offense though. i guess it all depends on who we have to trade to get him.
I would rather have Darius Miles but if we can get Patterson without giving to much up I am all for it. On a side note what do you guys think about giving Rodney White or Qyntel Woods a shot? Both are currently not on anyone's roster and have some upside.
The Rockets are the perfect team for RP a.k.a. the Kobie Stopper. If he wants head JVG could start him at the 3 and play head at the 2.
You know, the popular excuse we are getting now about players lack of shooting on our team is that Van Gundy makes them work so hard defensively that their legs are weak and this in turn effects their shooting percentages until they get used to playing the defense and getting their legs in condition so they can pick and take the makeable shots on the offensive end. Looking at Patterson's career stats, it's obvious he doesn't have 3 point range, he's not a long range bomber. But with that aside, he'as actually a 51% career shooter. In the years, when he has taken the most shots he has hit those shots at a very good clip. It seems he has enough intelligence to know what his limitations are offensively and to still be able to contribute at an efficient clip. And this is with him already playing the take no prisoners defense that he has made a career of doing. If he were to be traded to the Rockets, I don't think we'd see his shooting take a nosedive because Van Gundy burns up his legs. This year his shooting stats are down in the thirties. That may actually go up partly because he'll be creating havoc on the defensive end and getting some easy break looks offensively. We might as well face facts. With Van Gundy's defensive philosophy, the way for our players to improve their shooting stats is for them to get the job done defensively and get the break going the other way with the steal, forced bad shot, long jumper miss, and be able to get easier short lane jumpers, layups, dunks on the other end. We have to get the perimeter defense cranked up and then be able to grab the boards to get the posessions going in our favor. Patterson helps with all that and won't take shots away from TMac. There are 2 negatives about Patterson: 1) his past off court history; 2) if we don't get the job done defensively then we are forced to play the half court game and the defense will sag off him onto TMac and Yao and force him to put up more shots. Of course, that's what is happening now. We don't have any defensive stoppers so we are trotting down on offense and the defenders are forcing the ball to our perimeter players. What's the answer? Go get a long range bomber like Jarvis Hayes? What difference is he gonna make if he can't defend? Van Gundy is gonna break him down and his shooting percentage is gonna go in the toilet. We're back to thinking that more offense fixes our problems when our coach is a defensive minded coach. It doesn't fit. At this point, I'll take either Patterson or Miles to plug into our defense before I'd take a shooter to plug into our offense. We ain't gonna win anything unless we can cause San Antonio to have to work to score and be able to slow down their perimeter penetration. The player that bring havoc on the perimeter defensively and can knock down the 3 ball consistently along with being able to slash effectively to the bucket costs too much. That player is known in the NBA as a superstar. They get paid $10 million+. We can't afford them. We gotta look at players like Ruben and Darius.
so much for not making headlines... http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2232267 he's been placed on the inactive list for cursing out his coach. I take back what I said about him being quality
Patterson has his baggage. But in terms of just "on the court" type of stuff, he is exactly the kind of player this team needs. Someone that is physical, someone that is active, high energy and is athletic. I think he would be a BIG help to this team defensively. I am not saying the Rockets should get him, but right now he might be had on the cheap. The Blazers arent giving him the minutes he wants and are going with younger players. They probably would give him away for a 2nd round pick or something. The question is, are Rockets fans willing to take the "risk" of bringing on Patterson and perhaps hurting chemistry (what chemistry these days!?).
