Is it less safe if you have a cable modem ? He said to never use your CC on-line if you use Roadrunner. This guy called me about dsl, and he said that was the difference. Thus, one more time : DSL or cable modem ? ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." I honestly don't think it matters. As long as the site you are ordering from is secure, you shouldn't have a problem. The only difference between cable and dsl that I know of, is cable is a shared line and dsl is one dedicated line. But by being shared doesn't mean anyone else is going to see your CC number.... I think your informant was misinformed. rH ------------------ visit: groovehouse.org

I have said it before, MY CABLE MODEM IS THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME. ------------------ "The early bird may get the worm, but so does the bird that finished off the tequila bottle the night before"
Whoever told you that is a dork. Both DSL and cable modems can be safe and both can be unsafe. "Inherently" you could say that cable modem is less secure, but again, not necessarily. What I fear more than the method of communication is the actual "secured" site that hosts your information. In other words, if they store your information in their databases and it gets hacked into. BTW, I just switched from using DSL for over 3 years to using cable modem service with @Home because it's cheaper and is usually faster. ------------------ "I had mine chewed off by a boss one time." -- Behad leaves us wondering if he gets hazard pay...
I have bought a lot of stuff on my Roadrunner service with my credit card, and i have yet to have a problem. I've had roadrunner for about 2 years now, and i think if you have a fire wall, a secure site to purchase from, and a credit card that will protect you if something does happen...you should have no worries. ------------------ "The Rockets Fan Cometh..."
how much is a firewall ? are they hard to install ? ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." Harry Carey "Norm, if I had a mohawk scalp, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you."
get ZoneAlarm... excellent firewall. and it's like 19.99... tells you who's trying to ping you and always asks permission for accessing the internet. really good firewall/security program. http://www.zonelabs.com/ I've got it and it rocks! Even though my router acts as a firewall, ZA is just added protection. rH ------------------ visit: groovehouse.org

Steve Gibson, a widely noted security expert endorses ZoneAlarm and despises Black Ice Defender. He has run a number of tests that expose the flaws in Black Ice Defender. Trust me... get ZoneAlarm. It is a very very very good utility that is one of the few on the market that really keep you safe provided you configure it correctly. To find out more about ZoneAlarm and BID, go to www.grc.com. One thing to be noted in all this is that your online purchases may be safe on your end, but there's nothing stopping someone from hacking into a company's website/databases and lifting your data from it. Keep that in mind as well... ------------------ "I had mine chewed off by a boss one time." -- Behad leaves us wondering if he gets hazard pay...
ZoneAlarm should be free unless they changed it recently. Their "PRO" version costs money, though. ------------------ "I had mine chewed off by a boss one time." -- Behad leaves us wondering if he gets hazard pay...
you mean I didn't have to pay for it!? no... i opted for the full version. rH ------------------ visit: groovehouse.org
This is just not true. He used to endorse Black Ice, but later, after trying out zone alarm, decided that Black Ice had some flaws that were exposed by Zone Alarm. He despises for example, norton personal firewall. He simply no longer endorses Black Ice. [This message has been edited by Ottomaton (edited June 30, 2001).]
Also, the chances of some slacker clerk at some sleazy porno bookshop writing down your credit card info, for instance, is much greater than someone intercepting packets or hacking a website and stealing your credit card info. When you get right down to it, it is even easier to clone your cell phone and get the info that way. The chance of online fraud is way overblown. ------------------
I'll let his words do the talking for him. They speak better than either of us can for him. The following is a quote following an analysis of a DDOS attack against his site. I don't think just saying "he no longer endorses Black Ice" does his words justice. I'll let you all decide : ----------------------------- I did not have a current copy of BlackICE Defender around, but I felt that this was an important test. So I laid out $39.95 through Network ICE's connection to the Digital River eCommerce retailer and purchased the latest version (v2.5) of BlackICE Defender hot off the Internet. I had already removed all traces of ZoneAlarm and restarted the machine, so I installed BlackICE Defender, let everything settle down, and restarted the machine with my packet sniffer running on an adjacent PC. As far as I could tell, BlackICE Defender had ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER on the dialogs being held by the Zombies and Trojans running inside the poor "Sitting Duck" laptop. I knew that BlackICE Defender was a lame personal firewall, but this even surprised me. The Zombie/Bot happily connected without a hitch to its IRC chat server to await further instructions. The Sub7 Trojan sent off its eMail containing the machine's IP and the port where it was listening. Then it connected and logged itself into the Sub7 IRC server, repeating the disclosure of the machine's IP address and awaiting port number. No alerts were raised, nothing was flashing in the system tray. The Trojans were not hampered and I received no indication that anything wrong or dangerous was going on. I took a lot of grief after my LeakTest utility cut right through BlackICE Defender. Network ICE told everyone that LeakTest was "being allowed through" because it was a completely benign Trojan. I knew that was a load of bull (and they must have too), but it didn't really matter to me, and I had no affirmative means of proving otherwise. Well . . . I have that now, and so do you. I performed one final test: As I had with ZoneAlarm, I attempted to connect to the Sub7Server Trojan running inside the "Sitting Duck" machine on the IP and listening port number the Trojan was advertising all over the Internet . . . and it worked perfectly. I received Sub7's "PWD" prompt asking me to login. Anyone want an "only used once" copy of BlackICE Defender? I certainly have no use for it. To anyone who is still stubborn enough to insist that BlackICE Defender is actually good for something: PLEASE do not write to me. I don't want to hear it. I'm a scientist who will not find your mystic beliefs to be compelling. I respect your right to your own opinions, no matter how blatantly they fly in the face of logic and reality. That is, after all, the nature of faith. Happy computing. I suggest prayer. ------------------ "I had mine chewed off by a boss one time." -- Behad leaves us wondering if he gets hazard pay...
Hmmm... that's interesting. I know he didn't like the initial implementation of some of the features of Symantec's personal firewall, but I had no idea he absolutely hated it. It appears that it is one of only 4 or 5 firewalls that passed his Leaktest firewall test. Do you have a reference for this? I'd like to read more about it. I can't find anywhere on his site where he stated he despised the software. I'm not saying it's not there, I just can't find it. ------------------ "I had mine chewed off by a boss one time." -- Behad leaves us wondering if he gets hazard pay...
