    The Associated Press
    Published: Jun 28, 2001

BOSTON (AP) - An 18-year-old baseball player died after colliding with a teammate as the two chased down a fly ball.

Brendan Grant was playing left field when he ran into the center-fielder during a game in suburban Belmont on Wednesday. He was struck in the neck and chest.

"They collided, and having seen a number of these and having been involved with baseball, nobody, and I mean nobody, thought it was anything but a collision," said Dan Kelleher, who coached the team in the Middlesex Senior Babe Ruth League.

"Then one of the boys said, 'Mr. Kelleher, Brendan's having a difficult time breathing.' We all dropped everything.'"

Paramedics restored Grant's vital signs, but he died later at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge.

Grant died of a fracture to the larynx, or voice box, and cricoid, the cartilege around the larynx, according to the state medical examiner's office, which performed an autopsy Thursday. The other player was not injured.

Sorry to hear that. There is no doubt that it is dangerous when players collide chasing fly balls. I've seen some tough collisons that way. You concentrate on getting to the ball, hitting your cut-off man and making a play, not protecting yourself....

Wow, aweful news. Same age as me as well. Puts into perspective how little of importance sports really are. Good luck to his family, friends, and teammates.
