I'll probably be purchasing a digital camera in the near future for use on my trip to Italy over New Year's. I'm looking for something compact, that I can easily fit in my pocket, with around 5 megapixels. I'm hoping to get to get it for under $300. Any suggestions?

I've found the Canon Powershot ELPH's to be exactly what you are looking for. They are some of the smallest cameras around (about the size of a pack of cigarrettes) and their picture quality is amazing. My old 5 Megapixel ELPH takes better quality photos than my newer Sony 7 Megapixel.

    3 things to look for

1.high optical zoom (IM more imp than the megapixels, esp if its higher than 3.2)
    2. Lens type (carl zeis for example is an excellent lens)
    3. LITHIUM ION bATTERY (makes all the difference in the world)

Rotating LCD screen is another thing to look for. The added convenience is much desired.

Fuji FinePix E510 5.2 Megapixel Digital Camera - $149.99 Shipped AR (Posted November 22, 2005 at 8:55 am ET)

Buy.com has the Fuji FinePix E510 5.2 Megapixel Digital Camera for a low $149.99 after $30 in mail-in rebates. Free shipping is also included. New Buy.com customers can save $10 more with the coupon link below.

The new FinePix E510 Zoom is an easy to use 5 million pixel camera featuring a newly designed Fujinon 3.2x optical zoom lens with a 28 - 90mm equivalent focal range. The 28mm setting fits far more into the picture than everyday digital cameras - no more chopped-off edges!

The FinePix E510 Zoom features a wide range of exposure control, from fully auto to fully manual with all the combinations in between. An assortment of flash modes, white balance settings and macro mode add to an already impressive list of features. A 2 - inch screen means that all of these settings can be viewed easily while framing and composing your images.

The ergonomic grip and durable chassis of the FinePix E510 Zoom is designed with the photographer in mind who may find smaller 'lifestyle' cameras too difficult to handle. The E510 Zoom also adds PictBridge functionality the industry standard for direct printing without the need for a PC or Mac.

This would be my vote as well too. I bought it this year right before my sis's wedding and I love it!! I got it online so it was ~$50 cheaper than Best Buy and I bought the 512 MB memory too. It's a great, sturdy camera, trust-worthy brand and works well. Have fun in Italy!!

Have an elph as well and it is very good, and very small which is good for traveling. The only thing I don't like is there is no battery meter.

I'd like to feed off that post a bit to fluff my own feathers... it should be noted that Canon Powershots have excellent battery life and give ample warning of it running out.
