Plan for bombing near Padre Island raises questions Associated Press CORPUS CHRISTI -- Plans for a bombing site in Kenedy County -- one that could potentially replace the controversial bombing site in Vieques, Puerto Rico -- are still preliminary, a Coastal Bend economic official says. Dick Messbarger, executive director of the Greater Kingsville Economic Development Council, told the Kingsville City Commission on Monday that "there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered." To accommodate mass landings of Marines and armor, the government would have to cut three, 1.24-mile corridors through the Padre Island National Seashore. The corridors would also cut through the Laguna Madre, where a fragile ecosystem based on sea grass and the super-saline lagoon waters is now protected by the federal government. The Navy still needs to form a panel to study other proposed sites around the country and in the Caribbean. The results of that study should be due in October, one month before the planned referendum in Puerto Rico over the military's presence at Vieques, said Gary Bushell, a Washington lobbyist who has worked with area economic development officials and the Navy. The 222,000-acre area, which would stretch south nearly 20 miles along the coastline from Baffin Bay, could provide a joint training area big enough for large-scale land, air and sea assaults. But development of the area would require the government's condemnation of 175,000 acres of land held by the John G. Kenedy Jr. Charitable Trust, according to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times' editions today. --- reporting live for CC.net rH What the.... bomb the hell out of Padre Island and ruin the fragile coastline ecosystem... yeah, we need that. Wow! Thanks, rH. I hadn't read the paper here today. Oh yeah, drop some bombs on South Texas. They won't complain! This is such bull****. ------------------ I'm so amazingly cool you could keep a side of meat in me for a month. I am so hip that I have difficulty seeing over my pelvis.

BK, that's what I was thinking. What about those poor college kids who need to run around drunk and naked? I'm a bit concerned about the effect on wildlife refuges and whatnot, but otherwise there really isn't much out there and it seems like a good spot to bomb. ------------------ RealGM Gafford Art Artisan Cakes
South Padre is a beautiful place to spend your time, esp. further down the beach where there is no people. I've been there quite a few times and it is very calming. My mother used to go there every weekend before she had to have neck surgery which resulted in her not being able to do much more than lay around the house. ... its just a cool place and Id hate to see it taken away because of some stupid military ****. ------------------ .,.·^*'´'|'\..........,.·^*'´¯¯¯'`*^·,...,/|'`*^·-, '|.......'|::\......,·'.....,.·:*:·,......'`i:'|.......| '|.......'|:::|.....;.......':,:::,:·.......';:|.......| '|.......|::;i - ·;i'`:,......¯¯.......,·´|::|.......| '|.......'´.......'|'i:::`*:~·.–·~^*'´: :'|::|.......'`*·-, '|........,.-:^:':'\:'`:;:: :: : : : :: ::;·'i::/`':^·.,......`'i '|..,.:'´:::::::::::'\| '`*^~·:–:·~^*'´..'|/:::::::::'`:^:., | '´:;:::::::::;:-·^*'´.....................`'*^·:;-.....:;·' ....`·;:·'´........................................'`^·:;·´ [This message has been edited by CriscoKidd (edited June 26, 2001).]
