'Demeaning' recording credited to Miami athletes
    ESPN.com news services

A 2-year-old profanity-laced recording that denigrates women and minorities surfaced on the Web on Tuesday, putting the University of Miami's athletic department on the defensive about its image.

Miami's carefully cultivated image as a school well-past the days that earned it the reputation as a program lacking institutional control may have taken a blow when the rap song, which sources told ESPN.com includes the voices of several football players, surfaced on the Internet.

A group calling itself the 7th Floor Crew -- the name reportedly comes from the seventh floor of the Mahoney Residential College, campus housing at Miami -- made a recording referencing multiple acts of group sex, derogatory terms for women and minorities and dozens of curse words that lasts approximately 9 minutes. School officials say the song was recorded two years ago, but that seems to offer little solace.

"The Athletic Department has been made aware of a private audio recording made two years ago by students in a residence hall, some of whom were student-athletes," athletic director Paul Dee said Wednesday night in a statement through the school's sports information department. "The content of the recording is unfortunate, inappropriate and demeaning. This speech is not appropriate and does not reflect the values of the University or the Athletic Department.

"While the recording was made privately, it was not intended for public distribution or use. To be clear, the University and the Athletic Department disapprove of the content and its references. To those who may hear this material, we apologize. Any students whose voices can be identified will be subject to appropriate discipline and/or counseling."

Kyle Munzenrieder, a Miami student and author of the blog Miamity.com that published a report on the song, identified at least one of the members of the 7th Floor Crew as a current football player.

"I live on the 6th floor, and have good friends on the 7th floor, and those two floors are where a lot of football players live," Munzenrieder wrote ESPN.com in an e-mail Wednesday night. "The song really isn't indicative of the attitude of the current football players, and the 7th floor isn't some sort of hedonistic fantasy dorm zone."

If you've never recorded a flow in the dorm, you haven't lived.

    No big deal.

How is this offensive? They had a disclaimer saying it was not meant to be degrading to anyone.

I want to live on the 7th floor.

And this is why I wanted to as well! Too bad I didn't get into Mahoney, but I am on Pearson (connecting dorm) 7.

Btw, I just went by the kid's room (the one who was in the ESPN article) and wanted to teabag him or something (he was alseep and the door was locked). I think I might go take a **** in front of it...or maybe on his face. This is the same kid who I had class with last year...never said a damn word and was one of the weirdest people I've ever met.

of course i'm not serious about any of this

He goin' get ****ed by the 7th flo' tomorrow hahahha.

I'll find out who exactly was who (I can definitely find out who was in 704 easily). I went by the 7th flo' also to check out if anything was up, but nah, everyone's asleep.

However I did listen to the song in the study rooms, took out my earphones by accident and "that b**** goin' get ****ed" was briefly blasted haha.

IT'S GREAT TO BE A MIAMI HURRICANE! :D

Here's a response I wanna write to Pat Forde; any suggestions?:

Now I must say that your article was one of the most pathetic and lame attempts at cutting the throats of an athletic program that had a shaky history. Mr. Forde, you feel the need to make a story out of virtually nothing in an attempt to fulfill your ego and increase the massive tumor of what ESPN thinks is journalism. What has come out of this is pure sensationalist garbage. There is no need to have this much coverage on something that will now probably lead SportsCenter. You (the "journalists") simply make a mention of it, discuss how the University does not condone such material and move on.

It is NOT like these certain players felt serious about what was said in the recording; this was done simply for the enjoyment of a very small group of people. Granted, what was said was morally wrong, but these guys were simply doing this for fun; they ARE college students, Pat. I'm sure you've done questionable things in college, assuming you did get a form of higher education that is.

Again, this recording was not done maliciously and you don't want to admit it since you wouldn't be getting a paycheck unless you and ESPN decided to COMPLETELY overreact and be the cause of grief and a major headache for this fine university and superb athletic department. I feel this situation (as it is now) is comparable to Allen Iverson's record where he went out and bashed anyone and everyone -- for profit. This current issue is so far away from this, and if anything, was created for fun in response to Iverson's CD.

You folks at ESPN just feel the need to antagonize a school with a prior reputation that does not fit these current athletes. But again it has nothing to do about that; it is precisely due to the fact that ESPN needs to be the ultimate media w**** and tag the bully/evil/ugly reputation on a team that happens to be Number 3 in the nation. You want to single out a truly classy guy like Sinorice Moss and paint him as some kind of sex offender.

Thanks for opening my eyes Pat because according to you, some of my fellow classmates are evil. Take things for what they are -- harmless comradery among friends. Why don't you go dig up and focus on real sick two year-old stories like Marcus Vick attempting to solicit sex from minors by giving tem alcohol or any number of rules violations at many schools.

I can't wait to be at the Georgia Tech game this weekend where the focus is no longer on an amazing football team that is getting better each week, led by a phenomenal, yet humble quarterback in Kyle Wright. Too bad the game is televised on ESPN.

no I didn't proofread for mistakes like I usually do because I have an 18-slide powerpoint presentation at 11 AM I haven't started. :(
