[Computers] 64 bit XP? I finally ordered a bunch of upgrades for my computer. One of them will be a new 64 bit AMD processor. I also have the opportunity to get a 64 bit version of XP for nothing. Is it worth it? My new setup will be as follows: AMD 64 x2 4200+ Manchester 2 GB corsair DDR 250 GB Western Digital SATA 3.0 drive NVIDIA 7800 GT (PCI 16x), Will be dual sli, once I can afford the second card edit: I realized after I posted that I wasn't real clear on what I wanted to know. Is there a significant advantage/disadvantage to running a 64 bit version of xp over the normal version. Are there any incompatibilities with running 32 bit apps on the 64 bit version? Also, to answer this before it gets asked. My job has several licensed versions of 64 that currently are not being used. My boss in the tech dept is going to use me to test to see about converting some of our labs to 64 bit. Before I install on Thursday though I wanted to make sure it wouldn't cause any problems with games or other programs I run at home.
I actually have a similar set-up at work with 64 bit windows and a dual-core Athlon. 64 bit windows doesn't seem any different from the 32 bit version. When I installed it, Norton anti-virus didn't have a 64 bit version so I had to use a version from NOD instead. All of my major work programs (Matlab, Unigraphics, Nastran, etc.) work fine with it. It's the smaller programs and items (such as a logitech webcam, and burning anything on itunes) that don't work. I haven't noticed anything different from the 32 bit version so I don't know if it even matters yet.
I just got a new HP nc6220 laptop. Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Intel® Pentium® M 750 - 1.86 GHz, 2-MB L2 cache, 533-MHz front side bus 14.1 inch TFT XGA 512 MB (400 MHz)DDR 2 SDRAM 60 GB (5400 rpm) HDD DVD+/-RW drive Integrated Intel® PRO Wireless 2915ABG I love this thing. No 64-bit XP yet though.
Don't install over the 32 bit version. Keep the 32 bit version installed so you can run things that are incompatible with the 64 bit version.
Unless you have some serious need for it, I wouldn't get it. You have to make sure all the apps you use and all the drivers you need have 64-bit versions - otherwise it ain't workin' in 64-bit XP. Nexxes gives a solution to this, but I don't want to have to boot and reboot so I can run an app. That's a pain. I also could've sworn that a lot of SLI'd setups had issues with the OS early in its release. I'm not sure if that's still the case.
I'm looking to buy a new MB and Processor soon too. I don't know too much about the 64 processors, but I will be going for an AMD. First thing is I need to sell my nvidia 6800GT AGP card, because none of the new MB's support AGP.
Man, I have the same problem. I've got a 6600GT AGP card, and a Dell 8300 with too much warranty remaining to yank out the motherboard and void it. I feel sort of stuck, and I'd really like to ramp things up. Age of Empires III is running slower than I'd like. Bummer. edit: oh, I forgot... Castor, I hate you!
I have a 64 3200 athlon and i just installed xp pro x64... no driversssss especially for video so its useless.... if i can get a video and sound driver, ill be happy, coz it was pretty fast... until then, im rocking xp home, and ubuntu 64
