Where do you start him? At the 2 or the 1? I don't think JVG want's to start a rookie at the 1 just yet and if you start him at the two over DA then are we begging teams to post him up with taller 2 guards? I don't know. I think there is some merit to talk of starting him, but what worries me is that he still seems to get a little ragged when he has extended minutes...which I think is normal for any rookie. My guess is that if he continues to sink his shots, play good defense and know when to drive to the hole then he will get more and more playing time. If our current starters don't come out of their funk then it is only a matter of time before JVG adjusts his starting line up and Luther could very well be the guy that benifits from it. As of right now it looks like he has entrenched himself in JVG's rotation and I think that is pretty good.
head should start until sura gets back. or head should be the 2nd half pg. the kid looks like hes eager to get out there and play and prove himself, and he obviously has the skill so why not give him a game or two to start, just to try him out. it cant really get any worse than it already is.he might help the teams fg%
sure i would start him as the 2. DA is nice but he would be great off the bench. wesley doesn't do anything.
I agree that Head should start. He's outplayed Rafer Alston in every aspect of the game. I agree so much, that I started a similar thread on who the starters should be. But anyway, I think part of the reason he's on the bench is because he's a rookie and JVG might not think he's ready. Probably something concerning with Head's defense too. Not saying I agree because Alston isn't exactly shutting people down, but that's probably the reason for JVG, being defense and inexperience. Brian
I'm all for giving Head a chance to grow. Especially at the expense of Alston, since he's stunk it up! Give Head minutes, and he will prove he can play as a rookie!
Normally I might think that JVG will give Alston a couple more shots to get his a$$ and head wired straight; and he's a head case waiting to happen. Who knows what'll happen to his confidence if he gets benched? But a 2-4 start isn't what we wanted, and Alston has been so hesitant. Luther brings us what we need so badly. In a way, he's like some of those teams out there that have nothing to lose and so steal a game or two. He's fearless, especially, let me say, shows no fear of making a mistake. The kid makes good things happen.
I love this kid's confidence. He's the only player on the team besides Tmac who attacks the rim without fear. He doesn't finish when he attacks, but at least he's trying. His defense is quite good. Anyone notice during the nets game that Kidd was constantly punishing Alston by posting up? Head came into the game soon after and the post ups weren't so effective anymore. Oh, I also dig his one-leg-in-the-air pump fakes. I personally think that it's unnecessary, but opponents fall for it quite often.
so far....head has proven himself as a good pickup, but i don't think he will be getting the starting nod soon. concerning rafer....i think jvg has restraints on what he wants rafer to do. for instance, rafer comes off the screen and roll and does not look to go to the rim. instead, he comes of the screen and passes it to the wing. then the wing waits to pass it into the post, which becomes stagnant when the entry pass is not there. why not get rafer to attack the defense, because he will draw doubles and he can pitch or finish. i haven't seen much of rafer, so i do not know how he finishes, but i think his speed and handles can take the scoring load off of TMac and Yao.
an excellent point. i would like to see head start, but i would like to give alston more than a few games to get into the flow of things here.
Very true. And the days Parker was killing his team his rook and soph year, he had guys like Claxton and Kerr to settle the team down. Mavs did the same with Daniels. I'd rather start the young but roughly equal (but different) player, and bring the vet in if things are going badly. But if you start the vet, and they are slow and sluggish, the rook is just as likely to make things worse. So in this case, when we have a bunch of guys who are roughly equal (any guards save Tmac), start the younger one, in this case Head.
does the "Fire JVG" thread start in here too?? Because Luther did not play last night according to the Box score on ESPN. I have yet to see a Rockets game due to several scheduling conflicts (school and work just take up too much time) so I don't think it would be wise of me to comment. All I know is, there is SOME reason that JVG has not started Luther. I trust our coach to make the best decisions to garuntee victory. Outside of that, I don't care who he plays (though, I guess that would mean the BBS would be pointless if we couldn't say "how much player X sucks" and "our coach is an idiot")
As soon as he has a 2 for 9 shooting night, there will be 8 threads saying how much he sucks and that we should bench him.
IMO, JVG is doing a good job with breaking in the rookie. Too much responsibility too soon could make his head swell.
