    http://www.cnn.com/2001/LAW/06/25/scotus.bradylaw.ap/index.html

    Excerpt:

"The Brady Act was a historic compromise in which firearm purchasers submit
to background checks in exchange for the assurance that, once cleared as
law-abiding, the government will not compile any record of their identities,"
    lawyers for the NRA wrote.

Historic compromise? I seem to remember the NRA fighting tooth and nail to prevent that bill from passing. What a great euphemism for "man, we got our butts kicked that time, let's see how we can turn this to our advantage."

Oh, in case anybody's wondering, the Supreme Court refused to even hear their case. Their single-minded pursuit to fight ANY gun regulations no matter how logical they may be really bothers me. I can't see that they even have any qualms about using whatever tactics necessary to allow as easy access to guns as possible.

Most lobbying groups fight everything no matter what. The NRA is no different than LULAC, NOW, or any other group in that respect. It's just politics.

Yes, those gun-toting crazies have a right to be heard just like the rest of us. Remember the Simpsons episode where they had the NRA meeting at Homer's house and Lenny said, "We need assault rifles to hunt today's superanimals like the flying squirrel..." [IMG]

They fight every regulation because they know that some will still get through IMO. If they were to start backing down from some of the issues, more and more gun laws would be passed and they would not have a leg to stand on. As it is now, our freedoms are being taken away much more slowly.

Hydra, you've gotta fight for your right to keep an AK-47 in your house! To quote the Simpsons, "If we didn't have a gun, the King of England could just walk in and push you around."

Hydra: You know my feelings on the matter, in general. I just thought it was amusing reading about the NRA trying to make itself sound "moderate." And like they'd assented gracefully.

I still don't know why people want the right to pack heat!
