Great article! Thanks rockHEAD! I agree with him on many points. We are a world-class city, but everyone bags on Houston really badly, even most Houstonians. The thing that I really hate is just the traffic. I think we have the worst traffic in the world. It's absolutely horrible. Roads aren't big enough, and lately many have been in disrepair. Our pollution problem is bad, but not as bad as I think it has been made out to be nationally. There are a few things that I've noticed as well that are irksome. Everything in Houston is so far away. Partially because of the horrible traffic, but partially just because Houston is so spread out. I just moved back from SA (college), and I'm finding some things missing from Houston that I loved in SA. For instance, in San Antonio there are random parks all over the place. Nothing special, just a lake and such. Traffic in SA isn't as bad, and (from my experiences) the people are a bit more congenial. But Houston is an awesome place. We have world-class entertainment, incredible dining, ethnic diversity, great business centers, and nice people. ------------------ CC.net's most courteous driver Oh yeah, and I'm looking for a job right now, so hire me please
Traffic is worse in other major cities. Trust me. Try driving to Fenway Park in Boston. It's complete HELL! They're building some new highway or something there, the "Big Dig" I think it's called, and that's taking forever to construct and a lot of money. ------------------
<sniff> <sniff> Less than 2 weeks and I'm back in Houston premanently! (or at least for a long time ) Yay!! Lord Tree ------------------ Who is Lain?

I don't know how traffic could be much worse. I was on I-45 the other day, and it took an hour to move a mile. There is road construction due to the flood, but still . . . I've been in similar situations other places under normal circumstances. Oftentimes there's no accident or anything, just too many cars. I-10 west is backed up to Sealy in the morning (i've left Houston numerous times at 7 AM and seen traffic at a standstill all the way to Sealy. 610 isn't so bad, really. Neither is Beltway 8 or Westheimer, Richmond, Bellaire or Memorial. They're bad, but not as bad as other places. ------------------ CC.net's most courteous driver Oh yeah, and I'm looking for a job right now, so hire me please
Treebeard's is great before the game. Its only a couple bucks cab to the game. On your return check out Warren's, a few door north. Nice little bar, been there forever. ------------------ "Chucky who? I thought we were talking about basketball?" Charles Barkley
We have bad traffic, but not nearly as bad as Los Angeles. The pollution is worse there as well. Only thing they've got better is the climate. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
I've never been there, but I've heard that traffic in Rome is the worst in the world. http://www.viewimages.com/viewimage/?imageid=790810&promotionid=1&partnerid=2&type=results ------------------ I always thought "With my talent, it's only a matter of time before I'm discovered". Every city thinks they have the worst traffic. Why is that? And as bad as Houston traffic may be, there are places that are worse. Certain areas of Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, etc. are some of the most congested areas around. There are people who have a 2 hour commute as their daily drive one way. I'm thinking Dallas will be in there soon. Some of the traffic here on I35 is silly. The only thing in Houston I can compare it to is I10. The lanes in many places are about the width of your car and needless to say, this results in a lot of wrecks and a lot of traffic backups. If you guys and gals are interested in some rankings and statistics on traffic, go to the following link. On this article, if you look towards the right-hand side, you can also look at "City By City" data. Houston came in 8th overall. http://click10.com/sh/news/stories/nat-news-75793320010507-110552.html If anyone's interested, here are the results of another study done by the American Highway Users Alliance. According to this one, Houston's Southwest Freeway appears to have more daily traffic than any of the other major freeways listed. This study was apparently released around the end of 1999 : http://highways.org/news/unclog.pdf ------------------ "I had mine chewed off by a boss one time." -- Behad leaves us wondering if he gets hazard pay...
If anyone's interested, I think the record for the worst traffic jam is held by Paris. The jam was well over 100 miles. lol. Damn, I can just hear it now... Yeah, Atlanta is much, much worse than Houston. I am really liking this place, but damn the traffic is annoying. There have been studies and during rush hour, Atlanta drivers spend 15 more minutes in the car on average than those in LA. That article DoD posted mentioned the bad rush hour traffic in Atlanta. And that extends to regular roads as well, not just freeways. It doesn't help that a lot of "major" roads are one lane and have no turn lane. That way, if someone wants to turn left at an intersection against traffic, everyone behind that person has to wait until it can turn. Ugh, it is annoying. ------------------ I have just realized that the stakes are myself I have no other ransom money, nothing to break or barter but my life my spirit measured out, in bits, spread over the roulette table, I recoup what I can nothing else to shove under the nose of the maƮtre de jeu nothing to thrust out the window, no white flag this flesh all I have to offer, to make the play with this immediate head, what it comes up with, my move as we slither over this go board, stepping always (we hope) between the lines
I don't think I've ever read more backhanded compliments in one story. The city is the worst, but you should go there once. It's hot as hell and you'll probably die, but they have good food. ------------------ Things do not change; we change. - Henry David Thoreau
