or a hybrid? My wife wants to get the expensive package, but I am opting for DirectTV where I know the resolution will be 400 or a little better. In all likelihood we'll probably keep the standard cable we got but I would like to hear other opinions. ------------------ Rarely is the question asked: Guns kill squirrels than REDRUM to fools across the nation?
Good question. I know the "digital" portion of digital cable allows cable providers to shove more data and more types of data down a similar pipe than "regular" cable. I believe this is why digital cable offers more channels. If I also recall correctly, this was to directly go into competition with the satellite companies offering more channels at the time. Working for a few telecom companies, I know one of the supposed advantages was things such as Video On Demand and making telphone calls over broadband networks (similar to VoIP), but these really haven't been taken advantage of to anywhere near their full extent. If you're talking about whether or not the digital refers to something that HDTV would take advantage of, I dunno. I'm guessing that the digital broadcasts are up to the broadcasters and not the cable companies. In other words, digital cable can't make you a purtier picture unless the broadcasters send out a purtier picture to begin with. But then I don't really know and I could just be babbling. I honestly don't know but all of that will be unimportant in January of next year. That is when the FCC will require all channels broadcasting have a digital component and all cable systems go to a digital band. ------------------ Things do not change; we change. - Henry David Thoreau
I went to Time Warner's website http://www.twchouston.com/ and was looking for just a basic cable package, but all they have information on is Digital Cable. Are they NOT offering basic cable anymore? That's nuts. I'm pretty sure they still are, but why no information on just the basic cable packages? ------------------ [This message has been edited by RocketKid (edited June 25, 2001).] [This message has been edited by RocketKid (edited June 25, 2001).]
They have something called an "Economy Channel Package". Maybe that's what you're looking for : http://www.twchouston.com/cable/index.html#2 Hmmm... but from the looks of it, they don't have a pricing on it. Call 'em up and find out. ------------------ "I had mine chewed off by a boss one time." -- Behad leaves us wondering if he gets hazard pay... The economy pack is around $37. Does the price of digital cable come with the converter? It says $39.95, but I bet that is without the converter and taxes and all that other stuff. ------------------
