Cajunhorn and I were chating and we hate to say this but, sign Spree. He is currently unsigned and knows JVG's system. He can man the 3 untill McGrady gets back. Play D Anderson at the two with Barry as the backup shooting guard. Put D. Wesley at the end of the bench. Seems like the most reasonable plan given we don't have a lot of tradeable assets. Does not look like we can trade Howard untill Stro shows a lot more.
Yes, let's give it a try. In order to sign him, we Rockets fans in the world should better start to contribute to the FSFF (Feed the Sprewell Family Fund) now.
A 10-day contract won't be enough to feed his family... But yeah, I like the idea of replacing Wesley with Spree.
hmm, then what's the point would be my question. if tmac's out a "few" weeks, then spree won't do us any good when tmac comes back and he's riding the bench
NO WAY !! See T. Owens for reasons why...... The guy is a 35 year old, same as Wesley, he is not going to get any younger or faster..... No need to panic, it was only one game. DD
not worth it. best case senario: we don't sign spree and the rest of the team steps up so tmac doesn't have to do so much when he gets back. silver lining senario: we don't sign spree and we lose a lot of games with tmac out. we win about 50 games and drop to the 6th seed. silver lining is that we move out of SA's bracket and are able to make it to the conference finals. worst case: spree knows a 10 day contract would be his shot at getting back in the nba (maybe for another team after the 10 days) and plays for himself and destroys chemistry.
"Most expect Sprewell to start actively seeking employment again in the next month or so. His name already has surfaced in Orlando (with Hill hurt) and in Miami. "I'm pretty confident that he's trying to fine-tune the details of what he's going to be doing," former Timberwolves teammate Michael Olowokandi told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "Spree is pretty meticulous in everything he does, be it practicing, his businesses, his gadgetry, whatever it is. I'm pretty confident he'll be somewhere -- sunny." Wherever he signs, he's going to have to make due with a prorated portion of the league's veteran minimum -- $1.4 million. Poor thing." Detroit News ............................. Fred Hoiberg has always been considered pretty level headed. Check out his comments on Spree "Spree was a great teammate," insisted Hoiberg. "People, unfortunately, see the bad part, and maybe it's his fault because he gives the impression he doesn't care [what people think]. But he's a guy who had lunch catered for the team every day. He's the kind of guy who'll do anything for a teammate. He's very personable. His main objective is winning. He feeds off people yelling at him. Playoff time, he takes his game to another level. The true judge of a person is what Mark Madsen thinks of you, and Mark said he's one of the best teammates he's ever had. He'll make a great teammate for whoever picks him up." Chicago Tribune Remember Van Gundy's comments about promising the players that he would not bring in a knucklehead or somebody that wouldn't fit in to what we were doing and be a distraction. I have to believe that the lack of interest on the Rox part towards Spree is because either TMac or Yao doesn't want to play with them and I would speculate that TMac is that person. I have nothing to base this on.......just speculation. Why else would the Rox not be interested in him? Van Gundy is obviously a fan and everybody knows the power that Van Gundy has in personnel decisions these days. I have to believe that if Van Gundy was making this decision without any input from his star players that he would bring Spree in at least for a tryout look. If it is TMac that is keeping Spree away, Spree would be smart to pick up the phone and call him, and let TMac know that he wants to play with him. I can't believe that Spree wouldn't be interested in coming here to a winning situation with a coach he knows and a good/great team on the verge of something special. All things being equal I can't see Spree preferring to go anywhere else any more than he would prefer coming here. I say somebody get in TMac's ear and get him to soften up towards bringing in Spree. I think we could use the guy.
I say no to Spree. If Wesley needs to be replaced, replace him with Luther Head. It's time for JVG to join the 21st Century and play the rookie. Dallas did that with Josh Howard and Devon Harris and it has turned out rather well. Head may make some mistakes now but my guess is by April next year, he'll be a solid player due to his getting playing time.
Agreed, I'd like to see LH get more minutes. I also think that Spree would be a great teacher/mentor to him on the floor and during practice. VG would just have to make sure LH didn't follow Spree around off the court. Yes, he's 35 but he has a great body and he's terribly quick. Even slowed down at 35, he's still quicker than 80% of the 2 guards in the NBA. We don't have a lot to lose replacing Glover with him. And if it don't work, show him the door. But I think these are the kinds of situations that vets with baggage thrive in. Clean slate, drop the baggage, supporting role, playoffs, championships. See Rasheed. See Nazr Mohammed last year. See Bob McAdoo. See Dennis Rodman. Besides, the Mason play the other night would have fired up a player like Spree and he would have been shoving it back in NOK's face the rest of the night. If indeed what was reported was true, that Mason was making comments at the Rox bench, Spree wouldn't put up with that junk for one minute. This team seems to need some of that attitude right now, witness Van Gundy's lastest comments.
............................. Fred Hoiberg has always been considered pretty level headed. Check out his comments on Spree But he's a guy who had lunch catered for the team every day. He's the kind of guy who'll do anything for a teammate. Take it easy on this guy. He's not only feeding his kids but the whole Timberwolves team. The wolves must be starving by now.
Agree. I'd much rather see Luther get 30 minutes a night than Wesley or Spree. Youth needs to be served. Didn't we learn that from Dallas?
Spree's not a good shooter, he's old & has a reputation of being a cancer. ......doesn't sound like he would benefit the current squad in any way.
