June 19 — A 10-year-old boy who had been abandoned by his parents survived for two years in a cave with a pack of stray dogs who scavenged for food with him and may even have suckled him, child care workers say.

The boy, thrown out of his home by abusive parents at the age of five, ran with 15 strays in the southern port town of Talcahuano after he escaped from a care center two years ago.

"He lived in a cave with dogs and roamed the streets for food with them. He would eat out of garbage cans and find leftovers," Delia Delgatto, head of Chile's National Child-care Service, told Reuters Monday.

She said earlier reports by the police that the boy had been brought up by dogs since he was a baby had turned out to be off the mark. "He wasn't reared by the dogs as such, he lived with them in a cave," she said.

The boy, who has not been named, threw himself into the wintry cold waters of the southern Pacific Ocean on Saturday to escape from police who had been alerted to his case by the municipality.

"A police officer dived into the water and saved him," a spokesman for the police said. He said the dogs looked after the boy: "They were like his family."

The child, dubbed "Dog Boy" by the Chilean media, spent a day in a hospital in the city of Concepcion and was then taken to a child care center.

"He's showing signs of depression, is aggressive and is not speaking much although he does know how to speak," Delgatto said. "He was dressed almost in rags, was dirty and had filthy hair."

The police spokesman said the boy had drunk milk from the breasts of one of the female dogs, but Delgatto said she did not know whether he had been suckled or not. "We can't tell whether he was or wasn't," she said.

Photographs taken on Monday showed the boy, dark skinned with black hair, holding a child's crayon drawing of a pack of dogs. Two of his front teeth were broken and he had what appeared to be a scar on his left cheek.

    It's all about the suckling.

    The AP says:

Officials at the National Service for Children dismissed media reports that he was suckled by one of the dogs.

Asked whether he had actually drunk the milk of a dog, he replied ``yes, because I was thirsty,'' but he laughed and appeared to be joking, said Patricia Aguilera, regional director of the Service for Children.

``He has told us that he never drunk the milk of a dog,'' she said.

    Reuters says:

An abandoned 10-year-old boy found living in a cave and scavenging for food with a pack of dogs became so thirsty that he forced himself to drink a b****'s milk...

Asked whether he had drunk dog's milk as reported by police, he said, ``Yes.'' He stuck his tongue out and screwed up his face up in disgust.

``You still drank it even though you didn't like it?'' a journalist asked the boy, now living in a children's center in the city of Concepcion.

``Yes, because I was thirsty. It was my breakfast,'' Axel replied

So, did he suckle, or didn't he?

On a tangent, I read recently where in modern day China there are still some 5 million people that live in caves still.

Rich, that's not weird at all. There are actually many places (Turkey is another; Australia another) where that is commonplace -- and the caves can get pretty fancy too. I saw a picture of cave-village in Turkey where they had Mercedes parked in thier cave-garages and wooden window-sills in their cave windows. It was actually pretty cool.

So it is safe to say that my domesticated dog doesn't want to eat me, like my cat does.

Sad to say, but I got rid of my half pit, half Rot dog last year not because he killed 2 squirrels and 11 cats in our backyard from 95 to 2000, but his reaction to my new born daughters. The way his ears perked up and growled through the window and fence at them. it was a no brainer to get rid of him. For one thing, it was troublesome to see "have you seen my cat" signs around the neighborhood when we know these free roaming animals went into our backyard and met their demise. Sad to see that someone's loved pet was ripped in several pieces that we had to deal with. Always treated the dog well, but for some reason, he saw all other animals and small people as threats, but never big people.

roxran, do you think your dog viewed all large people as alpha types, i.e. he's scared of them. Were some of the maulings gruesome ? What did you do with the dead cats ?

gr8-1, We painstakingly put the remains in garbage bags, most of the times they were in one piece, except the last few, as much as I loved the dog and he loved me, he scared me about what he could do. After becoming a family guy, no way could I keep him.

PS Anyway we can work a trade for the dog-boy and send Kelly Cato to the Cave to suckle form the dogs, maybe then he will realise how good he could have things.....

    ROXRAN,

No one else seemed to mind, but I thought that was out of line. I'm all for gun rights, and hunting and crap, but even jokingly asking if a person is "game" is not amusing in the least.

A lot of people mistakenly believe that just because an animal can be good with them or their family, they can be trusted around the children of others.

That is a big mistake. They often see small children as game, and attack accordingly.

Also, small children tend to walk up on and startle animals, often from behind.

Please, do not allow dogs with mouths designed to inflict harm around kids. The damage they can do to a child's face (and it is almost always the face) in a few seconds is just horrible. Even if reconstructive surgery can be done, their faces are never the same, and their faith in animals is never the same.

Pit Bulls have a jaw which is designed for severe damage, and that is what it does.

Civil liability suits have not stopped the proliferation of the breed, so jurisdictions have begun enacting laws which either outlaw them entirely, or place criminal penalties for their attacks, or both.

If you own a Pit Bull and it attacks and maims or kills someone, you may face criminal prosecution, and prosecutors are looking to make examples of offenders. Same for a Chow, Rottweiler, or Doberman.
