The reason why Yao played well in first game is ......

Have I somehow garnered a reputation as a Yao Hater?

When I guy leaves after 25 minutes, that means there's 23 minutes of the game where he can't provide his defense and he can't force double-teams to get teammates open shots. Yao's 22 points on a good shooting percentage was helpful, but someone else would have taken those shots if he wasn't on the floor (hopefully not Juwan). But, Yao's defensive presence and his ability to contort defenses with his mere presence makes the game easier on the whole team. So, yeah, a guy who contributes well for a whole game may well be more valuable than a guy who's spectacular for only half. I'm not saying I'm displeased with the game he played. He did a good solid job. But I expect as much from him on a regular basis, and a reduction in fouls.

 

I didn't know Yao plays 48 minutes.

 

Yao and his girl are a good couple, they have close range in looks. What that means is that if a guy is 7, dating a 6 is ok, dating 7 good, dating an 8 is great. anything higher though and the regular person would say,"damn, how is he dating someone like that?" Likewise you see a guy who is 8 or 9 but dating a fat tubby 2.7 ho and you think, "wtf, thank you for taking that and not taking something better."

Overall, society is happy and less critical (but there will always be subjectivism and outliers) when someone dates in their range because there is no waste in value. I've noticed over extensive years of research and watching porno (which aided not in research) that while a 3 guy may be really happy he is dating an 8, society will be harsher on him and many guys will try to take away his girl. Persons within each others range are less likely to be broken up by others.

I will go on to hypothesize that the societal approval of relationships goes on to the success of those relationships in film and tv, except where the difference in range is meant as a point of humor (simpsons, family guy, seinfeld). Bradgelina? no problem. Rosanne barr and john goodman? gross to think them doing S&M nookie but allowable. Natalie portman and that ratty looking guy in SW? automatic public condemnation.

Shallow? absolutely. Missing factors such as $$$ and intelligence? perhaps, but we notice those second and third usually and they play a part. Stop wasting my time? haha its too late, you're already at the end. Shallow moral of the story? Be like Yao. Date in your range otherwise you are just wasting natural resources.

 

Are you somehow asserting that Marge Simpson is intended as attractive? Even if so, I would argue your basic premise that phsyicality is the only factor. Wealth, intelligence, and humor also fit into the equation. A '2' man who is earning $2million a year => the 10 woman. Generally as a rule, only men can compensate for a lack of physical beauty with these other qualities. For this specific example though, I would add that Marge's dull personality and horrendous voice help bring her down to Homer Simpson's equivalent in the equation.

EDIT: I didn't see your last paragraph. Disregard everything I just said. Though I still do think Marge is a relative equivalent. Lois and Peter Griffin would be a more apt example to what you are illustrating ie: the slob with the trophy wife
