Wilson was a career diplomat who had not only contacts and familiarity with Niger, but also Iraq. He was one of the diplomats who stood up to Saddam Hussein prior to the war. Wilson was familiar with the workings of both Niger and Iraq, had connections and a knowledge of how things worked in both places.
