The Detroit Pistons and the agent for Pistons defensive ace Tayshaun Prince told ESPN.com on Sunday night that they have reached an agreement in principle on a five-contract extension believed to be worth nearly $50 million.

The sides were facing a Monday deadline to prevent Prince from becoming a restricted free agent in July.

A good deal for the Pistons. Considering some of the players that got 5yrs/$70MM this summer, getting Tayshaun for $20MM less is a bargain. If he has a "breakout" year this year, that will confirm he is a high character guy the NBA should be proud of. I'll be shocked if he slacks off.

I haven't followed their cap situation, but the Pistons may have a tough time extending Big Ben next summer. I know Sheed, Rip and now Prince are locked up with megacontracts. Methinks Big Ben is gone next year, especially if Darko finally shows a pulse.

This guy is my favorite player in the NBA that isn’t a Rocket.. Seems like a nice guy and a great player, I loved how he was the only one that stayed on the Pistons bench during the brawl and looked like he didn’t know what to do.. I wish some day he would play for us..

So 5 years, 47M? That's just over 9M a year. That's probably the going rate for his services, especially if he continues to bring more offense to the table.

That was because he's rail thin and would've gotten his ass stomped.

However, if he can ever get a quicker release on that shot of his, Price could become a real prime time player.

Its is OK deal but not great. Those of you who are fine with Price for 5/50 mil should have been more than fine with Joe Johnson 5/70 mil. Johnson is younger, better, more upside--certainly enough to warrent 20 more mil over 5 years than Prince.

I also thought Price showed a lot more flaws when he tried to play Wade and also in the finals. Good to excellent role player, nothing more. With Chancey and Ben free agents next year that is a lot to spend on a less critical player (though much younger admittedly, probably what they were thinking). I have to think this season is Detroit's last hurrah because probably Chancey or Ben will be gone as well as McDyess.

the dude is a good player but not worth 10 mil/year. maybe more like 6-7 mil/year. i would like to see him put on about 15 lbs of muscle. he's like 6'9" and 195 lbs or something. he's definately an all-around player in this league

he's one of the best defenders in the league and as good as joe johnson is, they guy is never going to magically grow a monstrous wingspan. aside from Artest and AK47, i can't think of any players that are as versatile and can lockdown a variety of positioins.

He is one of the best defenders in the NBA one of the top 5. Defense wins championships, the guy is worth the money IMO.

He led Detroit in scoring the second half of last season. He's one of the top defensive players in the league. He's a team first player.

He's worth every penny of that contract and then some if winning is the most important thing. It ain't about publicity, stats, and jersey sales folks.
