That's weird. The story doesn't say that he dropped the microphone, just that he grabbed it. This leads me to think that the water had nothing to do with it and that it was probably a short in the microphone or microphone wire. He's probably performed baptisms there using the same mic without any problems. Plus, if he had dropped the mic in the water, it would have definitely killed the lady also...
http://www.baptiststandard.com/postnuke/index.php?module=htmlpages&func=display&pid=2957 There is no excuse for this. I just did a little research on this church and it's "ear-numbing sound system". It was co-founded by a musician. They and their staff should have known better.
I'm guessing this is what happened. There were stories floating around all day yesterday on the Baylor campus on what exactly happened, but someone said today in chapel that the microphone didn't touch the water. I'm still a little angry and confused about all of this. It doesn't make any sense. I guess it should also be noted, UBC is the church led by the David Crowder band, one of the most popular bands in mainstream Christian music. I heard Crowder is cancelling part of the tour for their new album...he and Pastor Lake were very close.
yeah..do you attend UBC?? do you know the Seay family?? Chris Seay was a friend of mine from college...was in my fraternity at Baylor. Crowder is amazing. again, i'm so sorry this happened. i don't even have words for it. i am close friends with people who are very close to the Lake family, though I never met him. they're all heading up for the memorial service tonight.

horrible...so many of my friends at Baylor go there, he was a great guy. I even woke up on Sunday to go and decided to sleep in after a long night. Kind of glad I wasn't there, because I have a lot of shaken up friends right now.
OK, this story is a lot more detailed... http://www.wacotrib.com/news/content/news/stories/2005/10/29/20051031wacpastorelectrocu.html
wow. My worship pastor, sam perry, was there and my whole congregation prayed. I'm sorry this happened.
Very sorry to hear this. But if I may, I would like to ask a question - I was raised catholic, and I am wondering - do baptists stand in the water when performing a baptism? In my church, the pastor would just sprinkle a bit of water on the person to be baptized (usually babies).
some do. there's all different ways of doing it. in some churches, there are little "pools" inside the church where baptisms take place. at other churches, they have little lakes on the property where they conduct baptisms.
From everything I've been told and read, his three young childfren weren't there. Which might be one good thing out of it, unfortunately his wife witnessed all of it.
I just heard the news on Wednesday.. been moving and was "out of pocket" for a while. This is like a punch in the gut. I am only 6 months younger, and a pastor, with a similar family - and vision... God rest his soul. And may God comfort his family and all who mourn this loss. This is so tragic. +
This is the last bit of his final sermon. He showed clips from the movie, Garden State, and talked about 1. Largeman's passion-less life...2. Sam's passionate life 3. the search for "home." Essentially 3 major themes of the movie and used them as lens to view God. But this final bit...in his last sermon before passing is something I think many of you will enjoy, whether you believe in God or not: Live. And Live Well. BREATHE. Breathe in and Breathe deeply. Be PRESENT. Do not be past. Do not be future. Be now. On a crystal clear, breezy 70 degree day, roll down the windows and FEEL the wind against your skin. Feel the warmth of the sun. If you run, then allow those first few breaths on a cool Autumn day to FREEZE your lungs and do not just be alarmed, be ALIVE. Get knee-deep in a novel and LOSE track of time. If you bike, pedal HARD… and if you crash then crash well. Feel the SATISFACTION of a job well done—a paper well-written, a project thoroughly completed, a play well-performed. If you must wipe the snot from your 3-year old’s nose, don’t be disgusted if the Kleenex didn’t catch it all… because soon he’ll be wiping his own. If you’ve recently experienced loss, then GRIEVE. And Grieve well. At the table with friends and family, LAUGH. If you’re eating and laughing at the same time, then might as well laugh until you puke. And if you eat, then SMELL. The aromas are not impediments to your day. Steak on the grill, coffee beans freshly ground, cookies in the oven. And TASTE. Taste every ounce of flavor. Taste every ounce of friendship. Taste every ounce of Life. Because-it-is-most-definitely-a-Gift. The whole sermon can be found at http://www.ubcwaco.org/kyle/content/binary/Kyle's%20Sermon%200ct.30-05.doc
